Cinelandia, Rio de Janeiro

3.3
#6 of 12 in Neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro
Neighborhood Tourist Spot
Stepping out of the metro station at Cinelandia is like stepping back a hundred years in time, in terms of architecture. In the early 20th century, a series of monumental buildings were erected around the square, including the Municipal Theater, the Brazilian National Library, the Rio de Janeiro Municipality, and the Higher Court. Although the square is officially called Praça Floriano Peixoto, the square is more commonly known as Cinelandia ("Cinema Land") after Spanish entrepreneur Francisco Serrador built a series of tall buildings that concentrated the best cinemas of the city. Most of the cinemas are now closed, but you will still find Cinelandia a lively spot in Rio thanks to its bars, restaurants, and cultural attractions. • Central location of the river where the culture was the center of everything. The imposing buildings remain today, some very well preserved. It will be a good walk through the site.

  • amazing place where happens always protests and speeches, that is people exposing their views. Nearby is the beautiful and charming city theatre and national library. Very quiet at any time of the day you have several stalls with restaurants and bars until all hours of the night.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
