Cinelandia, Rio de Janeiro

3.3
#6 of 12 in Neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro
Stepping out of the metro station at Cinelandia is like stepping back a hundred years in time, in terms of architecture. In the early 20th century, a series of monumental buildings were erected around the square, including the Municipal Theater, the Brazilian National Library, the Rio de Janeiro Municipality, and the Higher Court. Although the square is officially called Praça Floriano Peixoto, the square is more commonly known as Cinelandia ("Cinema Land") after Spanish entrepreneur Francisco Serrador built a series of tall buildings that concentrated the best cinemas of the city. Most of the cinemas are now closed, but you will still find Cinelandia a lively spot in Rio thanks to its bars, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Cinelandia is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Rio de Janeiro Edition.

The Cinelândia is the official Praça Floriano, and is important in the history of the city, past and present. It was built to be a carioca version of Times Square (NEW YORK), which caused several theatres, bars, nightclubs and restaurants were added to your surroundings. As in many cities around the world, the central region was losing importance, and with this also the square is no longer what's planned. Some buildings and important your icons back remained, as the Municipal Theatre, the national library, the Museum of fine arts, as well as the famous Yellow bars. Some recovery and reuse of buildings were promoted over the years, after the demolition of the Monroe Palace and the opening of the Metro station in the Plaza. So was incorporated the Federal Justice Cultural Center and was restored the Odeon Cinema, and opened branches of famous food networks, such as McDonald's and Starbucks. More recently, with the advent of the Olympics in 2016, the avenue that passes through one of the sides of the square (Rio Branco) ceased to receive conventional vehicles to become via the TRAM (fast vehicle on Rails) and pedestrians. In the field of architecture, there are examples of buildings in Eclectic style, neoclassical, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. A pity that recent management of city administrators did cover the fine specimen of street art painted in the square. Important to note that the square has a tradition also focus political events, in addition to various fairs (books, crafts, etc.). Worth knowing and access is easy by public transport, being convenient starting point for other attractions both in the central region as other of the city.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
