Cinelandia, Rio de Janeiro

(3.3/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Stepping out of the metro station at Cinelandia is like stepping back a hundred years in time, in terms of architecture. In the early 20th century, a series of monumental buildings were erected around the square, including the Municipal Theater, the Brazilian National Library, the Rio de Janeiro Municipality, and the Higher Court. Although the square is officially called Praça Floriano Peixoto, the square is more commonly known as Cinelandia ("Cinema Land") after Spanish entrepreneur Francisco Serrador built a series of tall buildings that concentrated the best cinemas of the city. Most of the cinemas are now closed, but you will still find Cinelandia a lively spot in Rio thanks to its bars, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Arrange your visit to Cinelandia and discover more family-friendly attractions in Rio de Janeiro using our Rio de Janeiro vacation planner.

  • I particularly love the downtown Rio. The story that each building has emanates from their facades. The beautiful, wonderful and majestic MUNICIPAL THEATRE, the Fine Arts Museum, the national library. Just the feeling of insecurity that is bad, because the patrolling in the area leaves something to be desired. The name CINELÂNDIA is due to the fact that the region, in the past, once housed several and varied theaters, today no longer exist.

  • Took the Bonde from Santa Teresa and ended up here. This is a large pedestrian urban space with attractive architecture and a couple of museums worth visiting. Mostly we wandered and people watched, s...  more »
  • The site continues to be point of several tribes. With easy access in downtown Rio, in particular with the VLT, worth a visit especially to meet the municipal theater. The site suffers from the same problems of other large urban centers, especially with the number of homeless. I don't know how the night, but I recommend going during the day.
