Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria, Rio de Janeiro

4.4
#5 of 45 in Historic Sites in Rio de Janeiro
Religious Site Tourist Spot
The marble walls, abundant sculptural decoration, German stained-glass window and painted ceiling of Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria make for a decadent but breathtaking space. According to legend, in the beginnning of the 17th century a group of Spaniards first sponsored the building of a small chapel by the name Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria in order to fulfill an oath they swore when their ship, the "Candelária," was almost lost at sea. When this chapel eventually fell into repair, a larger, grander building was envisioned in its place. The facade, which incorporates both baroque and neo-classical elements, was completed by 1811, when the church was inaugurated in the presence of King John VI of Portugal, but it would be another 66 years before the distinctive white dome--constructed in Lisbon and brought to Brazil by ship--would be in place. • Church, religion, Temple of faith. Right in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, people spend, in the rush of everyday life and there's the beautiful church of our Lady of Candelaria, Imposing, robust Quality, many stories stored and presented in the silence of the beautiful altars of the interior of the Church

  • Central Church on the River, full of history, including marked by a sad episode of urban violence. However, the Church is closed to visitation in full weekend.

  • Beautiful architecture, worth the visit. I walked through downtown and saw no danger, only need the care as in any big city. Church rich and full of details.

  • I enjoyed this place. So quiet.
  • There are music concerts happening here opened to everyone, every month. You can subscribe with the organizers in order to stay tuned on new presentations.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
