Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria, Rio de Janeiro

(4.4/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
The marble walls, abundant sculptural decoration, German stained-glass window and painted ceiling of Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria make for a decadent but breathtaking space. According to legend, in the beginnning of the 17th century a group of Spaniards first sponsored the building of a small chapel by the name Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria in order to fulfill an oath they swore when their ship, the "Candelária," was almost lost at sea. When this chapel eventually fell into repair, a larger, grander building was envisioned in its place. The facade, which incorporates both baroque and neo-classical elements, was completed by 1811, when the church was inaugurated in the presence of King John VI of Portugal, but it would be another 66 years before the distinctive white dome--constructed in Lisbon and brought to Brazil by ship--would be in place. Put Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria and other Rio de Janeiro attractions into our Rio de Janeiro trip builder, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • The Church is beautiful. Although the outside is very nice is in the details of the interior ceilings, altars, several notches in wood, etc. which shows all your splendor! A very special reference to metal doors which are designed by the Portuguese architect José Teixeira Lopes and your brother António Teixeira Lopes (sculptor) who are by themselves an authentic work of art. The location is central and easy accessibility. A visit not to be missed!

  • A pleasant surprise! Visiting the river passed around and decided to enter. What a surprise! A beautiful architecture! I had the opportunity to participate in a tour with a guide who told us about the architectural and historical features of the place. I was fascinated. Recommend loooong!

  • Not on the outside have no idea of the wealth and beauty of the frescoes, carved in wood, the paintings on the ceilings which refer to the Sistine Chapel. High ceilings and stunning visual q breathe history. Tip p enjoy the ride: less than 10 minutes ' walk away, the Avenida Rio Branco is possible to get there the Museum Tomorrow. You can go quiet. There are many walk-ins at any time felt that it was not safe, at least for the day, and the Museum you can also walk to the Aquarium Aqua River. Just leave the Museum and turn right, and follow the road parallel to the rails of the VLT. It takes a little longer, about 20 min. is safe, despite being a region portuaria.

  • I enjoyed this place. So quiet.
  • There are music concerts happening here opened to everyone, every month. You can subscribe with the organizers in order to stay tuned on new presentations.
  • Beautiful church
  • I appreciated especially the paints on the roof of this monument.
  • Beautiful and ornate with many side chapels to various Saints. Pipe organ goes well with the interior especially during Mass.
