Centro Cultural Municipal Parque das Ruínas, Rio de Janeiro

4.7
From its vantage point atop a hill, you have captivating 360-degree views of Rio de Janeiro framed by the empty windows of the old house. Once the opulent residence of Laurinda Santos Lobo, the “Marchioness of Elegance”, Centro Cultural Municipal Parque das Ruínas played host to the most fashionable social gatherings of the time, and, after major restoration work by award-winning architect Ernani Freire, is now a cultural center with an auditorium, gallery, outdoor stage, and its own calendar of interesting events. You can explore the three floors of the former mansion, now a fusion of original brickwork and modern iron structure, or enjoy a coffee in the lovely garden. Having lost none of its splendor, despite the years of abandonment and looting, Centro Cultural Municipal Parque das Ruínas is considered one of the most stunning locations in the city. • Rico in local culture. Great to see some sights of Rio de Janeiro and hanging out with family or friends.

  • Temporary exhibitions (an exhibition about cats, we who love these beasts!) and 360 ° view. Don't miss if you're in the area. We were there in the morning, liked, but would have liked even more to be there for the sunset! ... If you sleep in the corner (e.g. guesthouse casa 48) don't miss this.

  • How the city has kept the ruins yet restored them is a thing of pure beauty. The fact that it's still ruins leads you to the history of the building. The views from the balcony are gorgeous, and the b...  more »

  • its paradise with poor but great people! Fantastic places, latin girls, love for football and sports. Reccommended for carnaval, amazing experience.
  • Really nice park with a bar and very good view over the city, took an uber there because way up from escalarias had warning signs about robberies in that streets.
  • Impecable view of the city, great options of Theatre to see, great cafe. Best to go on weekends.
  • Beautiful view, great place for theater and cultural events. Historical landmark, worth visiting. The house of Laurinda Santos Lobo (a high Society personality from the turn of the century). Hosted many events and parties. She inherited money from her uncle – it is speculated that they had an afair. She also financed many inventors, musicians and painters, including Santos Dumont, parallel inventor of the plain.
  • Located in Santa Teresa was the residence of the famous Patron of the Arts from the Rio Belle Époque Laurinda Santos and the best view of the Rio center.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
