Catacumba Park, Rio de Janeiro

4.5
#31 of 71 in Parks in Rio de Janeiro
Designed as a sculpture park, Catacumba Park is also a tropical forest with many hiking trails under a lush canopy of native trees. You can always find cooler temperatures and a constant shade from the hot Brazilian sun here. After viewing sculptures in the lower section of the park, take a scenic trail up the hill, at top of which a panoramic view of the Lagoa district and the mountains of Dois Irmaos and Pedra da Gavea opens up. From here you can also see the iconic Christ the Redeemer Statue. This park was developed on the site of a former favela, and currently offers a number of adventures to visitors, from rock-climbing and rappelling, to zip-lining and canopy walks through the treetops. Our Rio de Janeiro trip itinerary planning tool makes visiting Catacumba Park and other Rio de Janeiro attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

The Park is very nice, with several sculptures of renowned artists. There are two trails of low difficulty level and the view from up there is simply stunning! Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Christ the Redeemer Statue, Ipanema and Leblon. Within the park there is a company of adventures and can make tree climbing. Worth the ride.

The Park is very well taken care of! Has bathroom, place to eat, sit, trail clean and well marked, some panels containing stories and even monuments. The track is very fast and quiet. I believe that in 20 minutes it is possible to arrive at the Sacopã Lookout, which has a privileged view of the lagoon, the Morro Dois Irmãos and the Pedra da Gávea. I saw some people just down the trail for where they came from and no longer meet the mirante of the vulture. Don't do this! When you leave the Mirante do Sacopã you will see that there's another path to the left. Follow what the mirante of the Vulture will arrive shortly after. From there it is possible to have a beautiful view of the Corcovado and the pond again. Then just keep the score down. This way is a lot less steep that ascent trail, which makes it much more enjoyable to come back. Finally, the Park does not have parking facilities. You will need to stop the car in the parking lot of the pond or at the curb of the track that leads to Raheem. Recommend going in the morning to avoid difficulties to stop the car. I went on a Sunday Sun after lunch and got lucky on the sidewalk.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
