Pernambuco House of Culture, Recife

(4/5 based on 2,200+ reviews on the web)
Recife’s former House of Detention is an unusual home for a shopping mall. Craft shops, galleries, and coffee shops occupy old cells, while one has retained its original features to remind you of the building’s macabre past. As well as an outdoor food court where you can try typical delicacies of the region, you will find an internet cafe, research rooms, a theater, and the offices of various cultural organizations. Pernambuco House of Culture also plays host to a variety of events throughout the year including concerts, folklore demonstrations, and artistic performances. • The House of culture was once a prison for black slaves. Today the small cells have boxes for commercialization of crafts. A pity that much of that craft, today comes with a label "made in China". Do what?

  • Today, 3 of feveriro of 2017, in house of culture making a survey of prices and had a scare with the very little amount of tourists there. We are still theoretically in high tourist season, but looked like a month of low season. Shopkeepers sat at the door in their stools gave an air of melancholy.

  • Located in a historic building, the old House of detention, offers many options of regional products, since typical foods to clothes and embroidery. Interesting.
