Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, Recife
(4.4/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
For a taste of Jewish history and culture visit Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the Americas, built in the mid-17th century. It was the opening of this synagogue that made the Jewish community’s migration to New York possible. The charming architecture of the building itself serves as a nice contradiction to the surrounding buildings. View the collection of photos and personal documents of the Jews who lived in Recife. Then, be sure to place your prayer in the replica of the wailing wall. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue by using our Recife holiday planner.

  • Well-preserved and with good content, Kahal Zur Israel's place to visit for anyone who passes through the old Recife. Located in the old Street of the Jews, today Rua do Bom Jesus, the exhibition at the Museum of the synagogue just sin by excess information in hard-to-read panels. In all, a very interesting experience for anyone interested in history.

  • ZAHAL ZUR ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE - (r. Bom Jesus 197/203) Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 17 pm. Sunday from 14 to 17 hours built in 1636, is the oldest synagogue in the Americas. Many Spanish and Portuguese Jews sought refuge in Holland (where there was freedom of religious cults), persecuted by the Inquisition. When the Dutch invaded this area in Brazil, many of them came to the lands of the new world. But in 1654 with the defeat of the Dutch armies, some 400 Jews living in Recife are forced to leave the city. Some migrate to new Amsterdam (now New York) there founding the first Jewish community in North America, but the majority returned to Holland. The interior of the building is from the 17TH century but the façade was remodelled in the 19TH century. On the first floor there is an exhibition about the Jews who fled Europe in the 20TH century, who founded the company of Yiddish Theater. There is also a reconstruction of a synagogue from the 17TH century in the city of Amsterdam with floors, ceilings and furniture. Here currently runs the Jewish Cultural Centre of Pernambuco

  • Deixe seu papelzinho na parede interna! ♥
