Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, Recife

(4.4/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
For a taste of Jewish history and culture visit Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the Americas, built in the mid-17th century. It was the opening of this synagogue that made the Jewish community’s migration to New York possible. The charming architecture of the building itself serves as a nice contradiction to the surrounding buildings. View the collection of photos and personal documents of the Jews who lived in Recife. Then, be sure to place your prayer in the replica of the wailing wall. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue by using our Recife holiday planner.

  • Great cultural relic of old Recife. A must for all who are interested in the history of Dutch or Reef of the Jews in Brazil-more specifically in Pernambuco. In addition to the exhibition on the first floor, the floors above bring very interesting information about the old Recife to several centuries ago and how was the reef. Very interesting!

  • Very interesting place for historical sake. As we study the history of Brazil the subject matter and many think the country existed only Catholicism. Worth a visit for cultural issue.

  • It was the first synagogue in the region. There is a poster that it commemorates. Can have any meaning symbolic, but to my not me represented nothing.
