(4.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
For a taste of Jewish history and culture visit Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the Americas, built in the mid-17th century. It was the opening of this synagogue that made the Jewish community’s migration to New York possible. The charming architecture of the building itself serves as a nice contradiction to the surrounding buildings. View the collection of photos and personal documents of the Jews who lived in Recife. Then, be sure to place your prayer in the replica of the wailing wall. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue by using our Recife holiday planner.

  • The synagogue is too beautiful, the visitation is all guided by the staff of the Museum. Sounds like you do a trip back in time and finds himself in the past from both the environment remained identical at the time of the presence of the Jews here in Recife.

  • Came in the Jewish Museum at the site of the former synagogue. Synagogue Cathal Tzur Israel — the first synagogue in South America, is located in old Recife. The synagogue was built in 1636, during the Dutch reign, 1630-1654. From Portugal due to the harassment of the Portuguese Government many Jews emigrated, previously lived in exile in the Netherlands. The first Rabbi Isaac Aboab became da Fonseca, who emigrated from Holland. The Jewish community flourished under him. 1500 Jews attended synagogue. After the liberation of Brazil a large part of the Jews left for the United States or the Netherlands. Soon, the synagogue was closed. The building stood until the early twentieth century and was destroyed here, you can learn about the history of the Jewish community and see many items once belonging to the synagogue. Interesting exposition and even the foundations of the former synagogue under glass.
