Cinco Pontas Fort, Recife

4.0
#13 of 50 in Museums in Recife
Cinco Pontas Fort is an old military fortress built by the Dutch in 1630 and one of the most representative monuments of colonial architecture. It is shaped to resemble five points of guns ready to shoot. Today, the wonderfully restored fort is a museum that features permanent exhibition of 150,000 maps, drawings, paintings, lithographs, and photographs from 16th to 20th century that illustrate the city’s history, as well as a gun arsenal including cannons and torture machines. Perhaps the most curious thing about the "Fort of Five Points" is that it only has four. The original Dutch fort had five sides, but the Portuguese leveled that fort and rebuilt it in their traditional four-pointed style. In the Forte das Cinco Pontas works the Museum of the city of Recife that tells the story of our city.

Unfortunately, the Museum of the city of Recife, as is called the Forte das Cinco Pontas, not worth to be visited. I was very disappointed with what I saw, or rather, with what I didn't see. To begin with there is no parking, if you want to Park close by will have to pay. The Museum has very, very little to see was a disappointment in the Fort and find 3 or 4 pieces. What's enough is a huge array of banners, but if I wanted to spend my time reading I would search on Wikipedia. With the exception of strong architecture there's nothing to see there in that Museum. I was very sad. Word of advice: If you want to meet a museum within a Fort built during the colonial period of the reef, walk a little bit more and go to the military Museum of the Forte do Brum, which is in the same neighborhood and much, much more interesting, has really a collection to be seen, and most importantly, is managed by the Brazilian Army, which with much fewer resources than the City Hall of Recife a work infinitely better.

Unfortunately we went on a day that was closed. Only works from Tuesday. Parking is paid at the entrance, and expensive!

Where to stay in Recife

It's no surprise that the vast majority of accommodations in Recife crowd around the city's long expanses of shorefront. Consider the southern coastal neighborhood of Boa Viagem for instant access to miles of vibrant beachfront, the prime location for locals and tourists alike to make the most of the sunshine. As well as high-end hotels and beach resorts, you can opt to stay in a range of fun, budget hostels, thanks to Recife's ever-growing popularity among backpackers. If you want something a bit quieter, look to the nearby historical town of Olinda, just 6 km (3.7) north of the city center. From there, you can easily make day--or night--trips to Recife proper.
