Specialty Museum Educational Site
At Carnival an army of giant Olinda heads parade the city streets. Each head portrays a celebrity icon, a famous politician, or a fictional character from a film or book. No matter the subject matter, it is a fantastically silly spectacle that's a cultural phenomenon specific to Brazil. Lucky for you, Casa dos Bonecos Gigantes is open all year long. There you can view past heads and even try on a few for size. The outlandish expressions on the head's faces are sure to bring a smile to yours as you pose for photo after photo between the gigantic craniums. • I'm not a lover of Carnival, in any of its forms, so perhaps my opinion is not very objective. Although the entrance is very economical, 10 or 15 real if I remember correctly, the devoting is very small, with a stifling heat in the winter and the only thing that can be seen are a few loggerheads of celebrities, mostly badly made imitations, that give you cuiqui...

  • I'm very suspicious because since I was a kid was crazy to get to know this place. 10 reais to the entry, when I was a guide explained about the site. I haven't seen the dolls that I would but what I saw impressed me! It's not a walk.

  • With all due respect to the creation, the exhibitions and the work of all those involved, this Museum presents nothing about the familiar party q their puppets. There's just some made-up dolls on display and nothing else. Do not recommend.

  • Unfortunately I couldn't see the dolls, do you have anything that close the 17:00 HS. But the view from up there is amazing. And excellent craftsmanship, good prices.

  • Obligatory stop on visit to the Top of the Cathedral. It's worth it!

  • Curious, cultural place, to see the dolls. If you're lucky you will see a presentation of frevo. The place is small and the entry was 10 reais (2017).

Where to stay in Recife

It's no surprise that the vast majority of accommodations in Recife crowd around the city's long expanses of shorefront. Consider the southern coastal neighborhood of Boa Viagem for instant access to miles of vibrant beachfront, the prime location for locals and tourists alike to make the most of the sunshine. As well as high-end hotels and beach resorts, you can opt to stay in a range of fun, budget hostels, thanks to Recife's ever-growing popularity among backpackers. If you want something a bit quieter, look to the nearby historical town of Olinda, just 6 km (3.7) north of the city center. From there, you can easily make day--or night--trips to Recife proper.
