Capela Dourada, Recife

4.6
Visit Capela Dourada, a jewel of Brazilian Baroque, which may even go unnoticed by those passing by in the streets. Peruse the various well-preserved rare images and religious artifacts, including the golden cross of Christ suspended with silver and gold rays shining behind his head. Pay attention to all the material covered in gold, making it no surprise that it’s known as the “golden chapel”. The gardens and courtyard outside serve as a peaceful oasis, providing tranquility from the busyness of the city. • The Golden Chapel is part of a religious architectural ensemble of great importance for Recife/PE. It contains the Golden Chapel, San Francisco Ig.de, Museum of sacred art with pieces that were part of the procession from the ashes (1740), LG. Santo Antônio neighborhood of 1606 first with their proper cloisters. The walls of the chapel are covered with various details of our tropical Baroque, images from Portugal and covered in frames with several Saints. Besides being all gold.

  • Beautiful place, a good option to watch a mass in the city centre.

  • I can only speak for the beautiful structure, the details of each point. Every detail in wood or stone. Not to mention the power of the Church. Pity that demonstrates a lot of how the poor and the black were discriminated against. But it's fantastic.

Where to stay in Recife

It's no surprise that the vast majority of accommodations in Recife crowd around the city's long expanses of shorefront. Consider the southern coastal neighborhood of Boa Viagem for instant access to miles of vibrant beachfront, the prime location for locals and tourists alike to make the most of the sunshine. As well as high-end hotels and beach resorts, you can opt to stay in a range of fun, budget hostels, thanks to Recife's ever-growing popularity among backpackers. If you want something a bit quieter, look to the nearby historical town of Olinda, just 6 km (3.7) north of the city center. From there, you can easily make day--or night--trips to Recife proper.
