Porto Velho

Not a feature on most tourist itineraries, Porto Velho can make an interesting stop when headed to Manaus by riverboat. A critical hub in both regional and national agriculture, the city serves as a major starting point for container ships headed for the far-off ocean. You'll find little to no infrastructure for tourism in Porto Velho, although this sprawling port boasts plenty of activity in the form of weekly markets, an art museum, and quite a few bars. Watching the lazily flowing river, framed by the jungle, makes for a nice end to a day of sightseeing in Porto Velgo. Summertime brings a local carnival festival, featuring popular music groups and traditional performances on the city streets. Where to stay in Porto Velho

As a destination with few tourists, Porto Velho does not feature an overabundance of accommodation options, though you'll find enough of a range to fit most budgets. Avenida 7 de Septiembre has quite a few economy hotels and hostels, where rock-bottom prices sometimes come with dubious quality and cleanliness. Most of the city's more upscale establishments, which range from family-run guesthouses to midsize hotel blocks, lie near one of the town's main thoroughfares, Avenida Governador Jorge Teixeira. Few options exist farther outside town, and you'll likely want access to a car in order to get around efficiently as public transport in the area can be unreliable.
