  • When passing in front, barely noticed that there was a museum. I came back and went in. at first glance, seemed kind of abandoned-and might need more investment, even-but the attention of the monitors has made all the difference in the visit.

  • Julio de Castilhos Museum is located at rua Duque de Caxias number 1205 in the historic centre of Porto Alegre, is considered the oldest Museum of Rio Grande do Sul and is open to visitation from Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 to 6:00 pm, with free admission and on Monday the shift is internal, and only for the researchers , by appointment. Created on 30 January 1903 through Decree Law number 589, by then President of the State, Antônio Augusto Borges de Medeiros, was initially termed as "State Museum" and in 1907, was renamed "Júlio de Castilhos Museum", named after the Former President died in 1903. The acquis covers your pictures, artifacts, historical pieces, works of art, swords, guns, coins, stamps, home furnishing, rosaries, images, religious books, government bonds, stock, tools, machinery, various instruments and professional uniforms, among others. Originally subordinate to the Secretary of the Interior and public works, in 1990 the Museum became subordinate to the Ministry of culture of the State, when it passed a technical framework itself. Also it is worth mentioning that in recognition of your historical importance and to be the oldest museological institution of Rio Grande do Sul, the collection of the Museum was inscribed in the book of fine arts Fall under Secretary of National historical and artistic heritage, IPHAN in the year 1937.

  • Small but attractive, stay close to the Cathedral, praça da Matriz, Piratini Palace, São Pedro Theater and Public Library. For those who will get to know the historical center is a required legal. After the Museum and the attractions above, you can descend towards the Public Market and the harbor by the viaduct of Borges de Medeiros, or the street of the beach and go to casa de Cultura Mario Quintana and the Plant flow meter, or better do everything in a day or two.

  • The museum itself is not particularly impressive, but the building is really nice and somewhat unique among all the surrounding high-rises. There is little to connect or contextualise the various objects, but in a way there are also some signs of care in the way the whole thing is kept.
  • The four stars are for the building. There are some cool historical objects here, especially from the Guarani in the Seven Missions area. As a history nut I was very excited to visit this museum but, unfortunately, it is half-abandoned, like many others in Brazil. Next to the cathedral and Marechal Deodoro Park. Free entry, so definitely worth the visit.
  • A lot of history badly presented. Some rooms are almost bare and the more interesting exhibits are in darkness. In need of someone with vision to bring it to life. Better use of space, decent lighting, a café and a shop would help.
  • Always a chance of rescuing the history of Rio Grande do Sul, in spite of the scarce investment on the part of the State Government.

  • Beautiful place, need more attention from the public authorities, as most of the city's cultural furniture. Always a joy to visit this space. Great service, especially Diego who knows a lot and is a great mediator.
