  • Established by the Government of Rio Grande do Sul in 1954, the Art Museum of Rio Grande do Sul, so under the coordination of Aldo Malagoli, which later gave its name to the Museum, quickly gathered a significant collection and became one of the most important cultural institutions in the State. Located in the historic centre of Porto Alegre, the building where today works the MARGS was originally built to be the Fiscal police station and was listed by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional in 1981, not long after I'd turned Museum in 1978, the building has a beautiful and impressive architecture that frames the beautiful stained glass Windows that beautify and brighten the mood. With the restoration complete, air conditioning and modern exhibition equipment, the MARGS could finally leverage a rapid expansion of its activities and project definitely in national and even international Museum scene, becoming a crucial agent in streamlining the cultural circuit Gaucho, offering tourists and visitors exhibitions with more than 3,500 works of art, ranging from the first half of the 19th century to the present day , covering different visual arts such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, drawing, textile art, photography, installation, performance art, digital art, design, among others and bringing the porto Alegre exhibitions of great importance, as the Petit Palais Paris tapestries, sculptures by Auguste Rodin, a selection of pieces from the Museum D Orsay ´ works of Uffizim a collection of paintings from the National Museum of fine arts , parts of the Gilberto Chateaubriand collection of the Museum of modern art of Rio de Janeiro and the complete series of engravings of Goya, of Spain, Caixanova Collection, among others and has also housed special editions of the Mercosul biennial. The collection of the Museum is considered the largest and most important public collection of Rio Grande do Sul art and also houses of renowned national and international artists, there are works of Francisco Stockinger, Pedro Weingärtner, Manuel de Araújo Porto-alegre, Vio Bianchetti, Iberê Camargo, Vasco Prado, Di Cavalcanti, Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral, Renoir, Manet and Pissarro, among many others. At the entrance of the building, a staircase leads to the first floor where there are three exhibition halls, corridors, a coffee shop/Café, and a gift shop, art on the second floor are the other exhibition halls and on the third floor is the terrace where the restoration workshops. For those who are passing through Porto Alegre the MARGS is a mandatory visitation site and admission is free.
