Da Praia Street, Porto Alegre

(3.2/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
With wonderfully preserved red, black, and white granite mosaics along the pavement, you must literally watch where you walk as you stroll down the oldest street in Porto Alegre. Officially called Rua dos Andradas, Da Praia Street is how you will hear locals refer to it, a throwback to when the street ran directly parallel to the shore of Lago Guaíba. As the heart of the city, the street has a lively atmosphere and it is always bustling with people and has numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops including the famous Livraria do Globo. It is also home to several significant attractions, among which you will find Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana, one of the largest cultural centers in Brazil, and Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores, the oldest church still standing in Porto Alegre. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Porto Alegre holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Da Praia Street and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • essential tour to meet the capital, but great care and preferably try to walk with a larger group of people to prevent burglaries

  • The street regarding your paving is very badly insulated, full of hawkers. Would have much chance of being a very beautiful, however the atrolhamento of stalls complicates the movement.

  • Rua da Praia, whose official name is Rua dos Andradas, is the oldest and one of the most traditional streets of Porto Alegre and although the official name was established in 1865, the old name still persists in the voice of the people and so continues to be called and known as Rua da Praia. Located in the historic centre of Porto Alegre, is home to several historic buildings, varied varied trade and offers many cultural options and points of interest. Rua da Praia is a urban and historical reference of the city, the scene of major social manifestations, is also well known for your trade, your clubs, hotels, cinemas, cafes and bookstores and also because every day is crossing point thousands of Porto Alegrenses, tourists and visitors to print a constant back and forth in the artery that is still one of the main and most important Capital. Particularly I was privileged to meet Beach Street in several different times, since in 1973 worked in the building, Santa Cruz, then in 1981 I worked beside the public market, but my contacts and customers were virtually all situated on the street of the beach and finally in 2003, worked at the end of Beach Street really close military zone, in these times the street of the beach was still glamorous , buildings and apartments were highly valued, the shops were of the best brands in the country, but currently I confess that every time I go to the Centre I'm impressed at what a location as traditional and history became, because unfortunately in recent decades the Centre was being abandoned by the Government and rua da Praia was dying, without maintenance, system building , bad care, full of garbage containers dumped in the middle of the street and without the slightest security, was being slowly taken over by hawkers, beggars and drug addicts. It's a shame what's happening and it's urgent to develop a revitalization project, reactivation of traffic by the opening night of streets 24 hours and an effective security plan to have back the true and traditional Beach Street has always been one of the postcards of Porto Alegre, during the day it's still a good ride but all night the Center is completely deserted and the location inspires a lot of care, as practically turns into a no man's land.
