Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara, Petropolis
(4.6/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web)
Admire the tall, elaborate Gothic Revival archivolts of Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara, final resting place of the imperial family. Elegant, 19 m (62 ft) tall vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and a 70 m (230 ft) spire completed in the 1960s make this church a landmark of the erstwhile capital of Brazil. Built from 1884 to 1925, the cathedral houses the tombs of the royal family, carved in white Carrara marble: look for the effigies of Dom Pedro II, the empress, and their children, buried here in 1921. • The Cathedral is spectacular, in architecture and engineering issues, with the roof formed by ogival arches with slender pillars multiples. A desbunde. Cool that the architect is Brazilian. Internally she was recently reformed (some 20 or 30 years). On the entry card account that it was started by the Princess Elizabeth and it wasn't finished, being resumed and completed in 1969. Doesn't explain a lot more than that and no one who was there, including know guides explain more than a paragraph of "story". I did a quick search and saw that she was abandoned in the early and resumed actually several times, with his works of art and internal elements being incorporated slowly. May not have removed the floor of hardwood, normal in a construction like this, he may never have been executed. The inner walls are of a stark white, and no decorations in gold or even frescoes as would be expected. It reflects the decline of the Church in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
