Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara, Petropolis

4.6
#1 of 9 in Historic Sites in Petropolis
Admire the tall, elaborate Gothic Revival archivolts of Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara, final resting place of the imperial family. Elegant, 19 m (62 ft) tall vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and a 70 m (230 ft) spire completed in the 1960s make this church a landmark of the erstwhile capital of Brazil. Built from 1884 to 1925, the cathedral houses the tombs of the royal family, carved in white Carrara marble: look for the effigies of Dom Pedro II, the empress, and their children, buried here in 1921. The Cathedral, an imposing and in neo-Gothic style, is a visit to do in this Brazilian city from distinct European flavour (seems to be popped in a Bavarian landscape!). This beautiful church, given the high position is visible almost from all parts of the city

Beautiful and imposing church. She is huge and very robust. Nominate a trip with a guide or search on the Cathedral, as it is a very nice place. Have a place to park in front of her, but is charged. We did a quick tour, just took pictures and we went to visit other places, so don't pay. The door had a tour guide offering guided visit Petrópolis, found very interesting but did not due to the short term. I intend to go back.

Very interesting architecture, neo gothic influence. Remains of the late emperor D. Pedro II, his wife Teresa Cristina, his daughter Princess Isabel(who freed the slaves) and her husband Count D. (Gaston).

Where to stay in Petropolis

Unfortunately, no matter how much you're willing to spend, your accommodations in Petropolis won't be quite as luxurious as Emperor Pedro's former palace. Nevertheless, you can choose from a range of delightful guesthouses and boutique hotels during your Petropolis vacation, many of which are housed in well-preserved colonial buildings and offer spacious gardens to enjoy. The city's old center, with close proximity to the palace and the striking cathedral, remains the most popular neighborhood among tourists. However, you can also find a range of places to stay in the southwestern neighborhood of Quitandinha, which contains a scenic lake of the same name.
