Estrada Real, Paraty

3.4
#5 of 13 in Historic Sites in Paraty
Walk back in time as you follow Estrada Real, the paved road built by African slaves in the 18th Century to take gold and precious stones to ships bound for Portugal. It remains intact through Paraty’s incredible rainforest, and passionate “eco-historical” guides lead tours that immerse you in both nature and knowledge. While you have Paraty’s rich and colorful history explained to you, you also learn about the local flora and fauna. Stop to admire the wild raspberries and avocados your guide will find along the way. Towards the end of the gentle hike, you will stop at a beautiful waterfall run where you have a chance to swim and slide, before finishing the tour at a cachaça distillery that still makes Brazilian rum the traditional way. A taste of the finished product ensures you finish the day in high spirits. Take a look at our Paraty online route planner to schedule your visit to Estrada Real and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Beautiful ride, the excerpt from State Park is great a simple track made of blocks, the asphalt is pretty bad but passable. There are access to beaches on the coastline that are much worse, but it really is the bad part of the trip. Overall it makes up for in my opinion, think to be walking in a park and not a road trip looks great

  • Step too often on the Paraty-Cunha Road. The road is beautiful, there are several charming establishments where the Valley and the Atlantic forest preserved landscape and the sea, at some points, is too beautiful. Is in good condition most of the stretch, and how the first trial, no need to come down at some points, geared to save the brakes. Although there were a project closing it at night when your retirement, this did not occur, and you can trafegá it for 24 hours a day (some sites are reporting erroneously that she closes the 17:30 the 6 hours). Good alternative to go to São Paulo to Costa Verde. Just be cautious.

  • The road provides incredible landscapes, but a close of Paraty is in a precarious state, with many holes, sliding out of bounds, passing only one car at a time. As it has many curves, it is sometimes difficult to visualize all the cars in the opposite direction and unfortunately not everyone has the same cautious behind the wheel. We made the route in both directions and on both the skill of the pilot and the good condition of the car are essential!
