Estrada Real, Paraty

3.4
#5 of 13 in Historic Sites in Paraty
Walk back in time as you follow Estrada Real, the paved road built by African slaves in the 18th Century to take gold and precious stones to ships bound for Portugal. It remains intact through Paraty’s incredible rainforest, and passionate “eco-historical” guides lead tours that immerse you in both nature and knowledge. While you have Paraty’s rich and colorful history explained to you, you also learn about the local flora and fauna. Stop to admire the wild raspberries and avocados your guide will find along the way. Towards the end of the gentle hike, you will stop at a beautiful waterfall run where you have a chance to swim and slide, before finishing the tour at a cachaça distillery that still makes Brazilian rum the traditional way. A taste of the finished product ensures you finish the day in high spirits. • The road provides incredible landscapes, but a close of Paraty is in a precarious state, with many holes, sliding out of bounds, passing only one car at a time. As it has many curves, it is sometimes difficult to visualize all the cars in the opposite direction and unfortunately not everyone has the same cautious behind the wheel. We made the route in both directions and on both the skill of the pilot and the good condition of the car are essential!

  • The path that leads to the beginning of the Sierra is already a spectacle, great mountains and valleys with wonderful landscapes, at the beginning of the descent we found signs for geared down in 1st and 2nd gear which is not a lie. the excerpts in which the first gear is paramount, the descent requires a lot and if you're not sure you're going to be meshed without brake. But the beauty overcomes. For those who do not know worth knowing.

  • The estrada real is really reformed the blocks are in perfect condition, the road is spacious and in harmony with nature, forming a magnificent view and a unique journey, comfortable and very safe. However, at the end of the reform, in the stretch of the road is bumpy RJ, with one or two craters where not even one car at a time is passing without problems: it must spend half the car on asphalt and the other half on the slopes of the ravines. In this piece, when it rains, the road desbarranca and rain pours down in mud leaving the asphalt slopes slippery overused; In addition to the risk of landslides, where has full asphalt is extremely narrow and without any visibility: after the curves, often it takes one of the cars back up, the curve and the slope of the ravine, so that the other can tighten and pass . Each flurry makes the road more precarious. A pity that 4 km spoil all the beauty of the rest of the road.

Where to stay in Paraty

If you want close proximity to raucous summer nightlife and some of the best things to see in Paraty, look no further than the historical center. There you can choose from any number of guesthouses, inns, and boutique hotels, which integrate seamlessly into the town's colonial architecture. If beach access is your primary concern, cross the canal and head a few minutes north, until you arrive at the coastal neighborhood of Jabaquara, where you'll find a range of cozy options. Farther from the center, the hillside neighborhood of Pantanal offers something a bit quieter among the trees.
