Estrada Real, Paraty

3.4
#3 of 11 in Historic Sites in Paraty
Walk back in time as you follow Estrada Real, the paved road built by African slaves in the 18th Century to take gold and precious stones to ships bound for Portugal. It remains intact through Paraty’s incredible rainforest, and passionate “eco-historical” guides lead tours that immerse you in both nature and knowledge. While you have Paraty’s rich and colorful history explained to you, you also learn about the local flora and fauna. Stop to admire the wild raspberries and avocados your guide will find along the way. Towards the end of the gentle hike, you will stop at a beautiful waterfall run where you have a chance to swim and slide, before finishing the tour at a cachaça distillery that still makes Brazilian rum the traditional way. A taste of the finished product ensures you finish the day in high spirits. Take a look at our Paraty online route planner to schedule your visit to Estrada Real and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • If you go to Paraty coming from São Paulo or Rio, be sure to take the Royal Road. Out of Guaratinguetá, the road passes through Wedge that has wonderful views of mountains. The sunset it is jaw-dropping. The descent of the mountain this virtually all paved and very quiet down. Only the part of the arrival of Paraty, which is still pretty bad. Anyway, it's worth the ride!

  • Recommend going and Paraty using the road that connects the Paraty, since it is the stretch of the so-called "Royal Road". The route is sinuous, but is well signposted and the asphalt is in perfect condition. Very little traffic. And the view is preserved forest. The only downside is that only the stretch that connects the Paraty presents kills preserved. Before entering exactly in the forest reserve, practically the entire forest was devastated, being sad the image of huge hills with no forest cover.

  • The road is beautiful, part of the Sierra in the Rio de Janeiro State has undergone reform, the road is narrow and dangerous, for greater security and visualization of beauty use of day. On the way down the mountain come down and check the brakes meshed, it is common to see cars losing brakes , the mountain is very steep.

Where to stay in Paraty

If you want close proximity to raucous summer nightlife and some of the best things to see in Paraty, look no further than the historical center. There you can choose from any number of guesthouses, inns, and boutique hotels, which integrate seamlessly into the town's colonial architecture. If beach access is your primary concern, cross the canal and head a few minutes north, until you arrive at the coastal neighborhood of Jabaquara, where you'll find a range of cozy options. Farther from the center, the hillside neighborhood of Pantanal offers something a bit quieter among the trees.
