4.2
#18 of 254 in Museums in State of Rio de Janeiro
Casa da Cultura de Paraty occupies a historic 18th century house originally built in 1754 and opened to the public in 2004. It houses a permanent exhibition about the local history and culture. In the Salon of Indigenous Culture, visitors can see the “carpets” made of colored sawdust and flower petals used during the festival of Corpus Christi in June. It also offers a variety of temporal exhibitions and concerts during the year. A variety of musical and literary events take place here for you to enjoy, along with a library to peruse and small bar where you can enjoy a nice coffee. One of the permanent exhibits is interactive, where you can watch and listen to locals giving testimonials of their experience living in Paraty. You can also purchase items from the locals, which helps to support small business. Open to public visitation, with permanent and temporary exhibitions and activities, is an important cultural initiative in Paraty. Beautifully restored, the House holds several spaces, such as an auditorium, the Hall and other smaller rooms for exhibitions, art and music classes. It is recommended that you consult the website of the institution to check the hours of operation and the exhibitions and other events at the time of your visit. The staff can be considered normal, with no major highlights. There are still things to improve, at least with regard to aspects linked to the visiting tourists: little information available (brochures and/or tourist guides of the institution) and weak internal signaling (both of the rooms, with the following scripts, as exposed parts, with more detailed descriptions). And, if the primary purpose "is to serve the local community, and, through your work, conquer also the tourist", is the suggestion of creating a store of souvenirs, crafts and local parts, especially the creations of students in art classes.

Very well managed and kept in order. With exhibitions of local artists, the House of culture tells the story of Paraty with historical and contemporary exhibitions. The visit should be mandatory.

My second home, I love this place, love the whole team working in order to do the best for all those who visit #casadaculturadeparaty hugs. Is a house turned to paratienses, with exhibitions with local artists, but that receives tourists of arms open. #vempracasadacultura

Just like everything in the historic center of Paraty is difficult to know what works there walking the streets. In the case of the House of culture has been the aggravation that when entering you still don't know where it is or what the purpose of the site. Despite the lack of dialogue with the public the works of pottery and other artistic interventions are note 10.

Where to stay in Paraty

If you want close proximity to raucous summer nightlife and some of the best things to see in Paraty, look no further than the historical center. There you can choose from any number of guesthouses, inns, and boutique hotels, which integrate seamlessly into the town's colonial architecture. If beach access is your primary concern, cross the canal and head a few minutes north, until you arrive at the coastal neighborhood of Jabaquara, where you'll find a range of cozy options. Farther from the center, the hillside neighborhood of Pantanal offers something a bit quieter among the trees.
