Mina do Chico Rei, Ouro Preto

3.9
More than two thirds of this 250 m (820 ft) deep mine is underwater, but the museum outside and the other one third of Mina do Chico Rei provides plenty of mine history for nondiving explorers. At the museum, you'll learn about the history of the mine and the reasons why it filled with water. Follow the museum up with a tour of the mine galleries not submerged; there you'll get a sense of how a worker must have felt working in narrow passages and large galleries. If you’re in an underwater spelunking mood, then book an introductory diving tour of the cave’s entrance with a guide. Below the water you’ll see tram tracks, old boots, and discarded tools resting where they were left when the mine was abandoned. After your underwater adventure, check out the restaurant for some quick eats and a cold drink. • The place is really amazing, never would have guessed that there would be a world so big in that mine. The instructors are very attentive. But the strong point of mine is your Toninho, owner of the mine, extremely nice, sweet. Try the rum and the tutu from Minas Gerais. The best I've ever had!

  • Slave who bought his freedom then this mine and used the gold to free others. Fascinating and worth your time. Loved it.
  • Great experience. It's a bit strange to wander around an old mine, as there is not much to see, but I loved scrambling up and down. You get a bit dirty, so don't wear white!
  • No big deal
  • Very good and essential to visit. Understood as counterpoint over the whole wealth and glamour of baroque churches, the side of those who suffered and shed blood to keep the buildings and all power of Ouro Preto. Humberto guided us and monitored during the journey for the mine and made it worth every minute. Recommend!

  • The mine is located in the city of Ouro Preto, where the ancients who Chico Rei, brought from the Congo as slave worked exploiting it to buy your freedom and, later, the mine itself, during the gold cycle in Brazil. He is other slaves hid gold in her hair. So get the money for your freedom and purchase the mine.
