Mina do Chico Rei, Ouro Preto
(4/5 based on 600 reviews on the web)
More than two thirds of this 250 m (820 ft) deep mine is underwater, but the museum outside and the other one third of Mina do Chico Rei provides plenty of mine history for nondiving explorers. At the museum, you'll learn about the history of the mine and the reasons why it filled with water. Follow the museum up with a tour of the mine galleries not submerged; there you'll get a sense of how a worker must have felt working in narrow passages and large galleries. If you’re in an underwater spelunking mood, then book an introductory diving tour of the cave’s entrance with a guide. Below the water you’ll see tram tracks, old boots, and discarded tools resting where they were left when the mine was abandoned. After your underwater adventure, check out the restaurant for some quick eats and a cold drink. • Quick ride to see how small-scale extraction was made of gold (1 hour max). Pay a reasonable value and enter alone in the mine, only with a safety helmet. We stayed as long as we want there. Legend has it that the Chico Rei was a slave that came from Congo and bought his freedom with the gold from the mine. He hid some of the gold extracted and kept to himself. Is a mine dug by hand, there are some tracks we have to duck to get through. Is illuminated in some galleries and very interesting to know. On weekends there's a restaurant, but I didn't get a chance to meet.
