Mina do Chico Rei, Ouro Preto

(4/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
More than two thirds of this 250 m (820 ft) deep mine is underwater, but the museum outside and the other one third of Mina do Chico Rei provides plenty of mine history for nondiving explorers. At the museum, you'll learn about the history of the mine and the reasons why it filled with water. Follow the museum up with a tour of the mine galleries not submerged; there you'll get a sense of how a worker must have felt working in narrow passages and large galleries. If you’re in an underwater spelunking mood, then book an introductory diving tour of the cave’s entrance with a guide. Below the water you’ll see tram tracks, old boots, and discarded tools resting where they were left when the mine was abandoned. After your underwater adventure, check out the restaurant for some quick eats and a cold drink. • You have to be careful with the street guides. the place needs to be more valued. but worth knowing!

  • Read reviews beforehand, and I got carried away by compliments. But it is clear that the critics were right. When reading the reviews, clearly identify some confusion of commentators with other mines in the region (notably in Mariana). There's nothing in this hole specifically beyond a few metres of tunnel, no guide, no explanation on methods of extraction and no decent reference on Chico Rei, legendary character of oral tradition. Failure to comply with the tourist interested and with the history and culture in a Cultural heritage of Humanity. Money badly spent.

  • Really an immersion into the past on the extraction of minerals, especially gold. Sensational ride with cart that descends over 200/300 meters into the mine. The not to be missed is the Crystal Blue Lake there is internally, and that legend says was originally from an explosion causing the death of many workers. Worth the visit!
