Mina do Chico Rei, Ouro Preto

(4/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
More than two thirds of this 250 m (820 ft) deep mine is underwater, but the museum outside and the other one third of Mina do Chico Rei provides plenty of mine history for nondiving explorers. At the museum, you'll learn about the history of the mine and the reasons why it filled with water. Follow the museum up with a tour of the mine galleries not submerged; there you'll get a sense of how a worker must have felt working in narrow passages and large galleries. If you’re in an underwater spelunking mood, then book an introductory diving tour of the cave’s entrance with a guide. Below the water you’ll see tram tracks, old boots, and discarded tools resting where they were left when the mine was abandoned. After your underwater adventure, check out the restaurant for some quick eats and a cold drink. Arrange to visit Mina do Chico Rei and other attractions in Ouro Preto using our Ouro Preto holiday planner.

  • The mine of Chico Rei has a very interesting story. Pretty. It is about her that this is national film Chico Rei ... rrsss is a good idea to watch the movie before going to Ouro Preto. Is private and not very well maintained and organized, but chances are you'll even like it. Even if you have a little bit of claustrophobia and go be alone in the early part of the mine, preventing the galleries further down that have around 80 cm high, too your ida Valley, by the context.

  • We were greeted by the owner of the place that gave us a history lesson and sympathy! Well worth getting to know the history and the mines that were part of the story.

  • It is close to the historic centre. We were greeted by a nice gentleman that told us the story of mina and Chico Rei and informal. There is a mini Museum with instruments of the era of the lavra, maps and other objects. The visit to the interior of the mine is fast, but confers concreteness to history, from that environment. It is a rustic experience and semi-professional, but you certainly have your value. Worth the visit! Some guides the way they try to convince you that other mines are more interesting (probably to earn Commission), so we must be vigilant.
