Museu do Mamulengo, Olinda
(4.1/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
At Museu do Mamulengo, you will discover a fascinating array of handcrafted puppets from many centuries, some over 100 years old. Mamulengo is a type of puppet/doll that was used to pass along church teachings and capture small town gossip and folklore. The museum is small and quaint, packed with historical puppets telling stories about life in Northeast Brazil. It is a colorful to understand the multicultural aspects of present day Brazil. Some give a humorous twist to the less attractive aspects of the development of society and industry in Brazil. The guide is very helpful with enough English and a lot of passion to give you a glimpse into the art of puppetry. By using our Olinda vacation route planner, you can arrange your visit to Museu do Mamulengo and other attractions in Olinda.

  • MUSEO DO SÉ - Rua do Amparo 59/Rua Sao Bento 344 Tuesdays to Sundays from 10-17 hs the Sé is a kind of typical puppet of the NE of the Brazil. The origin of the name probably comes from "molenga," which is a soft hand to move the puppets. While they are more than 1,200 pieces of collection of dolls and puppets of all shapes and sizes, only about 400 of them are displayed. Made by masters of the Sé with celebrities, of the local tradition, everyday family scenes, of religion, the history of maracatu and frevo, the history of the bands of the Serpiao (desert) with the life of Lampião from the beginning until its capture and beheading of the entire band including his mistress Maria Bonita. The oldest are of century XIX. A guide tells the stories of the dolls.
