Novo Hamburgo

National Capital of Shoes

One of 13 cities on the Rota Romantica--a route connecting cities displaying a heavily Germanic influence in the state of Rio Grande do Sul--Novo Hamburgo was settled in the 1900s by German immigrants. Even today, a majority of its 240,000 residents are of German descent. A tour of Novo Hamburgo traditionally centers around the city's historical core, with part-timber buildings and many museums displaying the Germanic roots of the city and its inhabitants. You'll also see another side of Novo Hamburgo--its famous shoe industry--celebrated in monuments, museums, and fairs proudly showing off the city's sole. Our Brazil driving holiday planning tool allows you to schedule your trip to Novo Hamburgo, learn about its attractions, and find out about where else to go during your holiday.

Where to stay in Novo Hamburgo

Accommodations in the city are much more "novo" than they are "Hamburgo," so those hoping to stay in a period timber-clad German pension will be disappointed. Novo Hamburgo's accommodations tend to cluster in the Centro district, either side of the main east-west thoroughfare. Essentially, hotels are the only lodgings in the city; they range from the simple and casual to more upmarket, business-traveler oriented fare. Despite the lack of variety in form, you'll find a decent choice when it comes to character and cost.
