Nova Friburgo

Founded by Swiss colonists in the image of their homeland, Nova Friburgo stands as a monument to Brazil's diverse ethnic heritage and entices visitors with its notable natural attractions. A tour of Nova Friburgo reveals a number of 19th-century European-style architectural gems (interspersed with a large concentration of lingerie shops, oddly enough). Thanks to its position in a tropical mountain valley, ecotourism in Nova Friburgo thrives, with hiking and mountaineering a couple of the most popular activities. Nearby rock formations and rugged peaks make rewarding treks, while hidden waterfalls and misty mornings provide relaxing alternatives. After dark, the young population and energetic town center keep things more than lively. Use our world travel planner: Nova Friburgo and all its delights await.

Where to stay in Nova Friburgo

As a popular tourist hotspot, Nova Friburgo boasts a wide range of boutique, midsize hotels in the city center, mainly clustered within a few blocks of the Bengalas River. These accommodations, just a short walk from the city's main streets, tend to be somewhat upscale, with onsite pools and gardens. Many feature architectural styles reminiscent of Swiss and German mountain chalets. In the hills south of the city, past Point de Saudade, you'll find more nature-oriented options and eco-lodges, which focus on comfort combined with a somewhat rustic feel. Plenty of "pousadas" also dot the area: traditional Brazilian guesthouses offering lower prices in exchange for fewer amenities.
