Mae Luiza lighthouse, Natal

2.6
#9 of 17 in Historic Sites in State of Rio Grande do Norte
Named after a beloved local midwife, Mae Luiza lighthouse is situated on top of high sand dunes and can be seen from almost any point along the coastline of Natal. This lighthouse is 37 meters (121 ft) high and has a spiral staircase with 150 steps. Although operated by the Brazilian Navy and still officially in operation, you can visit it by ascending a trail from the popular Areia Preta beach. The top of this well-maintained landmark is 87 meters (285 ft) above sea level. From there you can see not only Areia Preta, but also Morro do Careca (the city’s tallest sand dune) and Forte dos Reis Magos, a 400-year-old fortress once used as a defense barrier against French pirates. • The Lighthouse of Luiz's mother can be seen of the Via Costeira, because he is on the Hill on the sea. We didn't do the visitation, because some people have told us that the place was frequented by drug users and it was dangerous.

  • He is at the top of the Hill, the road passes underneath him and is seen from far away. With almost 40 metres tall, he is the most important part of Christmas

  • Beautiful, clean and organized. Approved by professional military. Congratulations.

  • Beautiful view of the beaches. Could be better care
  • Through the coastal route towards the bridge decided to move to meet this lighthouse. The view of the Lighthouse is more beautiful to take pictures of him for whom this next to the restaurant Meat Board. I never enter the Lighthouse. This is a walk only reasonable, there are other points of interest best.

  • As tourist point leaves much to be desired, not the facilities, but the difficulty of communication.

  • Because I live in front of the lighthouse. And I have a lot of knowledge and stories lived. And jokes that I remember from my childhood with friends ...

  • The name Mother Luiza, was a tribute to a midwife who lived in the region, being your name remembered both the Lighthouse as the Christmas town.

Where to stay in Natal

Looking to enjoy the best beaches and soak up the holiday atmosphere, most visitors eschew the city center when it comes to accommodations in Natal. Instead, many look to the southern beachside neighborhood of Ponta Negra, which brims with tourist resorts and the accompanying bars, restaurants, and cafes. If you want to escape the tourist route and experience the city itself, you'll find plenty of options along the beachside boulevard of Av. Presidente Cafe Filho--a stone's throw from the beach and the city center. For something much quieter, surrounded by rolling dunes and clear waters, stay on the seafront next to Parque das Dunas.
