Mae Luiza lighthouse, Natal
Categories: Lighthouses, Tourist Spots
Named after a beloved local midwife, Mae Luiza lighthouse is situated on top of high sand dunes and can be seen from almost any point along the coastline of Natal. This lighthouse is 37 meters (121 ft) high and has a spiral staircase with 150 steps. Although operated by the Brazilian Navy and still officially in operation, you can visit it by ascending a trail from the popular Areia Preta beach. The top of this well-maintained landmark is 87 meters (285 ft) above sea level. From there you can see not only Areia Preta, but also Morro do Careca (the city’s tallest sand dune) and Forte dos Reis Magos, a 400-year-old fortress once used as a defense barrier against French pirates.
