Mae Luiza lighthouse, Natal

2.7
#9 of 17 in Historic Sites in State of Rio Grande do Norte
Named after a beloved local midwife, Mae Luiza lighthouse is situated on top of high sand dunes and can be seen from almost any point along the coastline of Natal. This lighthouse is 37 meters (121 ft) high and has a spiral staircase with 150 steps. Although operated by the Brazilian Navy and still officially in operation, you can visit it by ascending a trail from the popular Areia Preta beach. The top of this well-maintained landmark is 87 meters (285 ft) above sea level. From there you can see not only Areia Preta, but also Morro do Careca (the city’s tallest sand dune) and Forte dos Reis Magos, a 400-year-old fortress once used as a defense barrier against French pirates. • To view the lighthouse everyone wants to visit, but we were told we must have a permission from the army to enter. In the period that I was because of the strike of the police I thought it best to watch from afar.

  • Just to take pictures ... we can't stay in place for a long time as I knew no made a point to stop.

  • The Lighthouse of Luiz's mother can be seen of the Via Costeira, because he is on the Hill on the sea. We didn't do the visitation, because some people have told us that the place was frequented by drug users and it was dangerous.

  • Beautiful view of the beaches. Could be better care
  • The Lighthouse is beautiful. The view is shockingly bad. Only recommend attention when you're there because the area is somewhat dangerous. If it is the night of preference for keep if there have any policing.

  • Through the coastal route towards the bridge decided to move to meet this lighthouse. The view of the Lighthouse is more beautiful to take pictures of him for whom this next to the restaurant Meat Board. I never enter the Lighthouse. This is a walk only reasonable, there are other points of interest best.

Where to stay in Natal

Looking to enjoy the best beaches and soak up the holiday atmosphere, most visitors eschew the city center when it comes to accommodations in Natal. Instead, many look to the southern beachside neighborhood of Ponta Negra, which brims with tourist resorts and the accompanying bars, restaurants, and cafes. If you want to escape the tourist route and experience the city itself, you'll find plenty of options along the beachside boulevard of Av. Presidente Cafe Filho--a stone's throw from the beach and the city center. For something much quieter, surrounded by rolling dunes and clear waters, stay on the seafront next to Parque das Dunas.
