In fact the pelourinho is one of the greatest symbols of oppression on humans for hundreds of years. Contrary to what many Brazilians think, the pelourinhos served not only to punish publicly the slaves. Served also to punish criminals and practitioners of serious heresies. It was common in Portugal and so here was introduced by the colonizers. Being the symbol of the power of Portugal in the mining towns of the 18th century, your location was in the center of the main square of the village, next to the Town Hall, Jail and when possible a church.

Where to stay in Mariana

Many of the most convenient places to stay in Mariana lie within a walkable distance of one of the city's main squares, the Praca Tancredo Neves. A surprising array of accommodation options cluster in the town core, from family-run bed and breakfasts and shared houses to more upscale, resort-style hotels complete with swimming pools. Keep an eye out for "pousadas," independently-owned guesthouses or lodges, often within a historical mansion or residential building. Alternatively, nearby Ouro Preto features a larger array of accommodations, though you'll need to bus or drive into Mariana.
