Mangue Seco Beach, Mangue Seco

(4.4/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web)
Small and charmingly rustic, the fishing village of Mangue Seco Beach lies at the tip of a peninsula formed by the Rio Real on one side, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Sandy trails connect a few scattered homes, locally-run guesthouses and restaurants, and a tiny, typical Brazilian church. To get from the village, on the river bank, to the ocean, you cross a vast expanse of tall, white sand dunes, perfect for dune buggies. The beach itself is wide and flat, and the warm shallows stretch out far into the sea. Despite the area's fame, its beaches having featured in a well-known telenovela, the extra effort required to access it keeps the tourist crowds at bay; it is easy, therefore, to find a stretch of beach all to yourself. • We went to Mangue Seco, in Bahia, from Aracaju. Were about 1 hour and a half to the municipality of Pontal, in Sergipe where we take a schooner that makes the crossing. There we take a buggy that makes a very cool ride through the dunes until you reach the beach where there are some tents that provide food service. The tour doesn't come cheap: van, schooner, buggy, and power is a comparitively exhausting, because we went out early, and we're already almost 18 hours, but it is certainly a very nice ride.
