This secluded jungle archipelago, boasting upward of 400 islands, is the perfect place for you to appreciate the unique ecology of the Amazon. Lying upriver from Manaus on the Rio Negro, Arquipelago de Anavilhanas is a naturalist’s paradise, both biodiverse and beautiful. You can explore the 1,000 sq km (386 sq mi) labyrinth of dense forest, creeks, swamps, and beaches by boat or board a small plane for some spectacular aerial views. A local guide will help you keep your bearings, as well as identify the abundance of flora and fauna. Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, sloths, giant arapaima fish, black caimans, and the elusive manatee. Should you go swimming in the warm waters, you'll very likely be joined by schools of friendly pink dolphins. • In fact, after about 15 minutes you see that the landscape is always the same, and you can only see few animals including alligators, birds and monkeys. With luck, toucans and macaws. The guide is essential to increase the interest, because it has marked the river that stops to take bananas to the monkeys, for example, that, by habit, always appear and even enter the boat. Guides are important tb to show where are the alligators, half submerged.
