Fortaleza de Sao Jose de Macapa, Macapa

(4.6/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
You will find this formidable fortress standing strong on the banks of the Amazon River, built by the Portuguese in the 18th century to protect against the French threat from the north. Taking 18 grueling years to complete, using stones brought from Portugal as ship ballast, Fortaleza de Sao Jose de Macapa is Brazil’s largest fort, and you can explore its cavernous barracks and well-preserved walls, which are 4.5 m (15 ft) high and incredibly thick. Now a Historical Heritage site, the building boasts a visitor center, art gallery, meeting rooms, and a concert hall, as well as amazing views of the river. Unfortunately, the guides speak very little English but are extremely enthusiastic in their efforts to help you understand, and with a little imagination, you’ll get the gist. • Visit Macapá and don't go in the fortress is a sin! In addition to his infinite beauty, there is a richness in its history. Worth going with a guide to the Fortress itself has and learn more of everything that goes on there.
