Fortaleza de Sao Jose de Macapa, Macapa

4.4
You will find this formidable fortress standing strong on the banks of the Amazon River, built by the Portuguese in the 18th century to protect against the French threat from the north. Taking 18 grueling years to complete, using stones brought from Portugal as ship ballast, Fortaleza de Sao Jose de Macapa is Brazil’s largest fort, and you can explore its cavernous barracks and well-preserved walls, which are 4.5 m (15 ft) high and incredibly thick. Now a Historical Heritage site, the building boasts a visitor center, art gallery, meeting rooms, and a concert hall, as well as amazing views of the river. Unfortunately, the guides speak very little English but are extremely enthusiastic in their efforts to help you understand, and with a little imagination, you’ll get the gist. • The ride inside the fortress is free and visually interesting, especially if you catch a clear day. The Amazon River is ahead in all your splendor. However, the walk itself left me somewhat uncomfortable and that's a big example of how the authorities in Brazil are little caring about the historical legacy and tourism. Explain: in spite of the structure, painting and lawn are well taken care of, the interior of the buildings is well abandoned equipment and chairs on the floor in some places. Informational boards are missing on the history and lifestyle of the site in your Prime. It's basically come in, take pictures and leave. The site could be much better used, but anyway ...

  • A paradise, a pleasant place to stroll with the family and get to know a little about the history of Amapá. It's dangerous to go at night.

  • One of the biggest fortifications built by the Portuguese Crown to ensure the Brazilian territory, today it is open to the public for tours and see some of your story and of the State of Amapá in Brazil. It is often used for exhibition of works, plays and cultural shows. Some of its areas are abandoned in need of reforms, still worth a visit.

Where to stay in Macapa

Macapa offers a relatively small variety of mid-range hotels and accommodation options. As this isn’t a common backpacker town, you may have trouble finding hotel staff who speak English, so come prepared to speak some basic Portuguese or bring a good phrase book. Look for accommodations in the center of the city to be within walking distance to most attractions, or stay near one of the few roads into town.
