Cidade Alta, Joao Pessoa

3.5
#11 of 14 in Historic Sites in Joao Pessoa
Cidade Alta--"High City" in English--is the historic and cultural center of João Pessoa, and as you wander the streets, you will pass mansions, theaters, museums, universities, libraries, and churches, many painted in bright colors. Some of the buildings have undergone renovations after the area was declared a National Heritage site in 2007, but they still maintain the defining characteristics of their original architecture, be it Colonial, Baroque, Rococo, or Art-Deco. Sites of particular importance that you should include on your tour are Basílica de Nossa Senhora das Neves, Conjunto de São Francisco, Teatro Santa Rosa, and Centro Cultural São Francisco, each having played a significant role in creating the city’s identity. Essential part of the sidewalk to meet the historical centre of Jampa, is to know the high city. There you can see the city from above and take beautiful pictures.

This time I've come by car the attractions of the city, ideal for those who have time, is to book a few hours, better in the morning, to percorreras streets of the center of João Pessoa. It's not the oldest part of the city, but still worth the walk.

Knowing where to start is always important in any situation. So, facilitated much the acquisition of a roadmap for pedestrians from the historic centre of João Pessoa, which is divided into downtown and script script of the upper city. This script is the Municipal Secretary of tourism (3218-9850/33218-9852 83), there are the hours of operation and contact of many attractions. In one of our first points of visitation, the Franciscan, noting our desire to know as much as possible of the historical part of João Pessoa, gave us a script like that. Noting that there is a need to gain entry to the Franciscan Set (R $6.00, at the end of last year). Our starting point was the Parque Solon de Lucena, where it comes down from the bus. From there, it was entrusting to the legs. It helps a lot to use comfortable clothes, sneakers, sunscreen (we were in the summer), coconut water intake (found easily in JP) and disposal. My wife and I didn't do it all at once. The tour in the historic center was unhurried, over the course of two weeks, inserting one QC standard with other activities: beaches, Woods, shopping, etc. and paying attention to security, as there are locations that is better (a couple) to avoid the end of the afternoon. For the script, the following points comprise the upper city: Parque Solon de Lucena, Sun Plaza Adauto, Church of Santa Teresa da Ordem Terceira do Carmo, Church of our Lady of Mount Carmel, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Paraíba, House 34, House of tiles or large House of tiles, * Solar Advisor, * Academy of Paraiba, * San Francisco Square, * Set, * old Franciscan Priests, * the powder House , Former College of our Lady of the snows, Sun Plaza Huldrych, Cathedral Basilica our Lady of the snows, Church and monastery of St. Benedict, left of the Virginius and Mello, White Lodge days, * Third grandson, Vikram Viaduct * Former State Public Library, * House left of Pilgrim oak * Church of the Mercy, a former Jesuit College, Palace of redemption, Venâncio Neiva, Square Trade Academy Epitácio Pessoa , Court and João Pessoa. Legend: * Are junction points between high and low, belong, in this way, the two scripts. A lot, right? Of course I couldn't hit all the details, but it was really nice and pleasant to get to where it was possible. This is one of the ways that I use to try to get to know better a city, which is, "dive" in it.

Where to stay in Joao Pessoa

As you'd expect, most of the accommodations in Joao Pessoa crowd around the eastern coastline, jostling for the best position to catch a glimpse of the morning sun. Of these areas, the beach neighborhoods of Cabo Branco Tambaú and Manaíra offer by far the best range of places to stay. In pleasant contrast to many of Brazil's other coastal cities, a restriction on high-rise buildings along the shorefront has helped the city retain its laid-back, natural feel. Consequently, most hotels are housed in smaller, unobtrusive buildings. You won't find a huge range of budget accommodations in the city, but if visiting in low season (March to November), you can bargain for as much as 40 percent off the regular price.
