Farol do Serrote, Jericoacoara

3.0
#7 of 24 in Historic Sites in State of Ceara
Lighthouse Tourist Spot
Step off the beaten track with a visit to Farol do Serrote, a lighthouse standing as the region’s symbol of remoteness and isolation from the world of screeching car horns and electronic billboards. Not just a remnant of the bygone days, this lighthouse is still in operation. Due to extreme shallowness of these waters, vessels often need careful guidance as they approach the shore. To preserve the area’s timeless quality, artificial street illumination is still forbidden by local law, which makes the lighthouse a necessary beacon of light for seafarers and villagers. You can stop by to watch the sunset from here, or stay late to see boats returning home after long days on the sea. Where to stay in Jericoacoara

As part of a national park, building restrictions in Jericoacoara keep all new constructions within strict guidelines. As a result, the pousadas (guesthouses) here are squat and rustic, in keeping with the remote, paradisal charm of the place. Despite its isolation and small permanent population, Jericoacoara's tourism infrastructure has grown markedly in recent years, adding lots of pousadas to the main village. Ranging from luxury options with pools and other amenities, to simple rooms in humble abodes, you'll find accommodations to suit various budgets and tastes. Book in advance, especially for peak season (December to February).

  • If you visit this lighthouse, be sure you will see one of the best view of Jericoacoara area. But to reach the top, you will face a huge dune.  more »
  • We visited this lighthouse as part of a tour. I don't think we would have done on our own. The views go on for miles - but not everything you see is "beautiful".  more »
  • On the way to Pedra Furada I took the time to vist the Farol de Serrote Lighthouse. Its an important Landmark but not an obligatory stop if you feel you dont have the time and energy.  more »
