Quartel de Itu, Itu

#14 of 33 in Things to do in Itu
If you're interested in Brazilian military history, you should stop in at Quartel de Itu while you're in Itu. Home to the Quartel Duque de Caxias museum and an impressive collection of old photographs, the building served as a barracks for the Diodorus Regiment military unit starting in 1918. Before then, it housed about 400 students of the College of St. Louis. In the museum, you'll find numerous artifacts of early 20th-century Brazilian history, such as uniforms and weaponry. Jesuit priests orginally built Quartel de Itu in 1867, so the complex contains a church in addition to the musuem and barracks. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Itu holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Quartel de Itu and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • In my opinion the most beautiful building of Itu, very well maintained. Today hosts the 2 GAC. We ask the visitor at the entrance and the soldier Renato introduced us the Museum and told us the story of the building and the Jesuit church. Very nice ride. The Museum is small, but has World War II items like helmets, gas mask and some equipment such as radios. 1000 Itu fighters served in Italy at Monte Castelo outlet during World War II.

  • This barracks in addition to the military function itself also houses a small museum. Next there is a church at the time of the Jesuits, very friendly and Nice. The place doesn't look very inviting, but just ask the monitor (a soldier) that the entire building and your story become accessible to the public in good part. Worth the visit!

  • Before the rich families of Itu moving to Sao Paulo, lived in the city centre and placed their children in great religious schools as the Sao Luiz, who happened to be a barracks when students are gone

Where to stay in Itu

Much of Itu's accommodations lie in the city center, in the form of larger, upscale hotels that provide pools, fine dining, and plenty of the amenities you'd expect from well-known chains. While these tend to feature higher prices, they offer easy access to the attractions in the city center. Budget travelers should keep an eye out for smaller family-run guesthouses and hotels scattered around the historic core. To escape the bustle of the city center, consider staying in the surrounding countryside. Though you'll need some form of transportation to get to and fro, staying in the outskirts puts you close to some of the region's numerous plantation-style homes, many of which date back to the 18th century.
