One of Itu's most beautiful examples of colonial architecture, the Baroque Bom Jesus Sanctuary and Church will mesmerize you with its detailed religious art. From the outside, take note of the the statues of Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John gazing skyward. Inside, pay special attention to the columns of the church's basilica, which mimic those of the Church of St. John in Rome. The origins of Bom Jesus Sanctuary and Church date back to the 17th century, and it was rebuilt between 1763 and 1765. The church has not undergone major restoration since, so it stands as an authentic piece of colonial heritage.
