Prateleiras Peak, Itatiaia

#7 of 14 in Parks in Itatiaia
Geologic Formation Nature / Park
Prateleiras Peak is a dream for the truly adventurous! This stunning natural wonder reaches 2539 m (8300 ft) in altitude, so it’s not for those scared of heights, but the view is absolutely breathtaking who are determined to reach the top. The initial part of the ascent is quite easy, but towards the end it gets more difficult, requiring ropes and lots of courage. It’s recommended to go with a guide and be very prepared with boots, walking sticks, snacks, and water. Walk above the clouds and take in the 360 degree view. • It is possible to know the attractions without a guide if the intention is only the hiking trails, but for those who want more adventures, hire a guide to the escalaminhadas and enjoy the ride with good photos and safety. The downside is the service in the lobby of the park for information and organization, as well as the payment only in cash. It is necessary to get password for the attractions.

  • The upper part of the Itatiaia National Park is one of the most popular destinations for visitors looking for adventure and cool, polite people in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The hike to the base of the shelves is quiet, the way we find various rock formations and a fantastic visual. It is recommended to hire someone with experience or a guide.

  • Incredible to imagine how so many stones remain stacked for so long. Is without doubt one of the most impressive I've ever seen formations in a mountain. The ascent is technique, but no big deal. It's worth it!

  • I enjoyed the location, and I noted that the peak of shelves in Itatiaia, inspired the artist Brecheret, in the execution of works of the monument to the Flags located in Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo. The DNA "of stones and even the Inspiration of canoes, and horses of the monument and of nature. 2017/June

Where to stay in Itatiaia

Despite being the largest town in the area, Itatiaia offers relatively few places to stay. Your best bet is to look for accommodations in the town center, near Praça da Emancipação, where you'll find a few small hotels and inns. If you want to visit the national park, look for accommodations at the park's entrance, or even inside its boundaries, rather than in town. You can also find a much larger selection of accommodations in Penedo, just a few kilometers down the road.
