Dating back to the end of the 17th century and built of hewn stone, Matriz de Sao Jorge dos Ilheus Church is an imposing yet simple single-tower cathedral located in the historic town center. This is the city’s oldest church and one of the oldest in the entire country. Simple on the outside, the building is rich on the inside. It houses the Museum of Sacred Art, which was founded in 1970. Drop in to see its collection, which includes a secular statute of Saint George, sacred documents, various items of worship, as well as a large panel portraying the history of the city.   • a landmark in the middle of urban life, people seem to actually attend mass around here! At any given time, you can witness some singing, elderly praying at one of the stations of the cross!  more »
