Praia do Sino, Ilhabela

4.0
#7 of 51 in Outdoors in Ilhabela
Praia do Sino is noted for shallow, calm waters and white sands surrounded by coconut trees and tall palms. Kayak or snorkel in these peaceful waters, or fish alongside local fishermen. They have been known to catch stingrays, but you can try for something smaller, of course. Nearby are ancient rock formations, which have become legendary for a bell-like sound, produced when one rock hits another. A walkway can take you right up to these huge stones. Bring a hammer, a useful tool if you want to tap the rocks and hear the famous ringing of bells. You can also walk a trail to the south of the beach, where a clear stream flows straight into the sea. Very easy to reach and very beautiful! The water is so calm ... Good for those who want to relax! As we went in August, was practically empty, with a couple families only. Had a trailer and a stall selling things to eat and drink. The stones are legal to take pictures and the sound it makes (Bell's Beach) is very curious! A very nice ride and easy to access for those who want to relax and enjoy. There is a small parking lot near the sidewalk, if you're lucky, you don't even have to pay to park and enjoy this beach.

One of our favorite beaches! It is worth to stop at the beach of the Bell and check out the clatter of stones.

Where to stay in Ilhabela

With much of the island protected against overdevelopment, all but a handful of accommodations are found on the western coast of Ilhabela. There, upscale hotels with plenty of private grounds lie to the north or south of the main town. Look in the town itself for the main budget-friendly options, with characterful pousadas (guesthouses) the most popular option. The island can be pretty busy during peak seasons (especially summer, December to March), so booking ahead is essential. With the mainland so close, you can easily hop on the ferry back to Sao Sebastiao to sleep.
