Pico do Papagaio, Ilha Grande
(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Hike through the rainforest and up to Pico do Papagaio, the highest point on the island. Take some light food, plenty of water, and hire a local guide to take you up this steep climb. The trek can take several hours to complete, and you do need an experienced local to show you the way through the thick Brazilian jungle. This trail is worth every drop of sweat, because at the top (which looks like a parrot, hence the peak’s name) you are rewarded with a view of the entire island and the town below . Pick a clear day to avoid clouds obscuring the final vista. Lucky visitors also get to see howler monkeys, the region’s noisiest residents. • NOT to BE MISSED. The trail that leads to the pico do papagaio is complicated, endless increases in dense forest and descents that put your knee the proof, but I am sedentary and managed to get on top. We started making the trails the 2 o'clock in the morning and arrive close to the 6:00 in the morning, the view is amazing is the Sunrise makes it worth the effort. It is not mandatory to hire guides to make the climbs, but I recommend, track signaling is old and very battered.

  • Climb the Pico do Papagaio with PRIME TOUR (behind the store of Havaianas, Rua Bouganville). The Group of about 15 people, and two guides have accompanied us. The rise started at 2:30 in the morning. The entire medium is to difficult, a few bugs along the way on the flashlight head, but nothing get in the way too. We reached the peak around 6:00 in the morning, the Sun was rising. The view is spectacular, you can see the entire island practically 360. The sky was 100% clean that day, so we can see the city of Rio and the Pedra da Gávea. We were told that, arriving at night, you can still see the Christ the Redeemer Statue lit. The guides were very good, recommend, Martín is an Argentine guide very nice, lives on the island a few years ago. Upstairs roll photo shoot with GoPro of guides. On the way back you can take pictures with them. I will be back in big island in December, and I want to use the same agency. I highly recommend the Agency and this adventure!

  • Waking up at 1.45 after a few drinks, the thought definitely crosses your mind- "is this worth it", especially after the first section when the hike has barely started however once you get going, you ...  more »

  • Five stars for the amazing view you get on the top. You must know this is not an easy hike, it demands strength due to the steep natural stairs formed by trees that take you up 1000 meters! Take enough water and food, plan ahead if you want to make it up there so to be back before dark. It is very easy to get lost at night in the mountain, take a flashlight always just in case. In case of any doubts ask the local guides for information
  • Great trail, takes around 3h30 to go up, 3h down. Great 360° view of the island at the end !
  • Top view of Ilha Grande !!!
  • i dont know how long did it take to be on the top , but definetely it is worthy
  • Natureza exuberante, ótimo local para rapel
