Abraao Cove, Ilha Grande

3.8
Situated between high mountains emerging from the sea is Abraao Cove, a piece of paradise surrounded by the lush greenery of the Atlantic Forest. This is not a beach ideal for swimming but rather a great place to relax, have dinner, and enjoy a beer or nice caipirinha (a popular Brazilian cocktail made with rum, sugar and lime) while listening to the samba or other Brazilian music being played by the locals. Snorkeling will allow you to explore the small cave with the brilliant light from the ocean illuminating its crevices and to take in the sights of the natural aquarium.

The best way to reach the island is by Angra dos Reis, a two-hour dirve from Rio. From there you can take the hour-long ferry ride across, but keep in mind that the ferry is actually a small boat that carries about 30-40 passengers. You can view the schedule on Ilha Grande’s website, but keep in mind that the boat might not leave at exactly that time. Consider hiring private transport and book them for your return as taxi service does not exist in town. Plan trip to Ilha Grande with our itinerary maker to find out where to go and what to do.

  • I don't particularly like it. You lose a lot of time in this parade to go down for a place without any condition (my opinion), narrow, cramped, dark place, to see a small crack. It's nice, but not worth the price nor sacrifice.

  • It's worth the adventure, but who's afraid of tight places and dark quit. Also not many rides that agencies make this route of Abraham to the cave and be inside a private property owners charge a fee.

  • For a long trail to Acaiá cave, or by boat. The cave there is an effort to get down and crawl into your interior, not reaching 1 metre in height and slope, meaning the sea and gallery that is filled with water due to current Navy. The show is the reflection of the Sun on water, entering the cave inside ... reminds me of a laser beam. Worth the swim in salt water in the small cave and spend unforgettable moments. If you have claustrophobia don't go.

Where to stay in Ilha Grande

The village area by the dock is home to the largest number of Ilha Grande's accommodations, with options varying from family-run, rustic pousadas (guesthouses) to mid-range and luxury hotels. Elsewhere on the island, you'll find upscale resorts offering wide-ranging amenities, such as swimming pools, bars, restaurants, and spas. Though most lodgings lie along the coast, a couple of options farther inland situate you in scenic parts of the jungle interior. Alternatively, head back to the mainland to sleep at one of the simple hotels in Conceicao de Jacarei, the destination of the Ilha Grande ferry service.
