  • The Museum is located within the more traditional and old high school on the island. Meet the building would be an attraction. The Museum has an interesting collection of finds on the island, especially the Indians. Very good.

  • The Museum operates within a traditional school, a very beautiful building. I went with two children and was approved by the trustee and by two guides. In addition to the sambaqui man and its peculiarities, there is a very interesting space with fossils and stuffed animals. Kids loved it.

  • Good collection, but could improve the Organization, didactics and the explanatory texts, because when you make a visit guided comprehension is impaired.

  • This is inside the Collegio Catarinense. It is a great museum, with an excellent teacher, professor, who will guide you, and tell you a lot about things. I think it was one of my best museum experience!! Thank you Sr. Sidney!
  • The middens are constituted mainly of formations clam shells, formed over thousands of years by the populations that inhabited coastal regions. These shells were discarded after the consumption of shellfish, forming huge mountains. Although the cases of the Brazilian coast, as in Santa Catarina, the largest in the world, there is evidence of Shell mounds in Europe, in America and in Africa. The word sambaqui has etymological root in Tupi-Guarani, meaning of tank shells. The people who inhabited the coastal regions and formed the Shell mounds with their actions are known as sambaqui people. The recently reformed, as they are also called the Shell mounds, measure, in Brazil, between 2 and 20 meters tall, and may reach 100 metres in diameter. Some are dated with more than 5000 years. Archaeological studies show that mountains were formed by shells and food debris deposited at the same place for several years. But there is also evidence that there were remains of animals, as well as tools used by these primitive populations. On the other hand, the remains of human bodies may suggest that the Shell mounds served also as cemeteries.

  • Need to say that, by being in a school opens in the holiday period. I've been for more than a kilometer in the rain (it rains all day here in Florianopolis) to figure it out.
