Forte De Nossa Senhora Dos Remedios, Fernando de Noronha

Walk around the famed fort and its defensive system of walls built by the Portuguese in the 18th century at Forte De Nossa Senhora Dos Remedios. The walls are 2.9 m (9.5 ft) high, and 3.5 m (11.5 ft) wide at the base and 3 m (10 ft) at the top, and at its peak the fort had 27 cannons, some of which you can still see. Climb to the top of the 11 m (36 ft) tower in the centre of the fort and see all the way to the neighboring islands. You'll enjoy particularly beautiful views of sea around sunset. Very interesting to see the remains of the fuete_prision, located in a strategic place in the island. For many decades it housed the prisoners who built the cobblestone streets of the village. You can see the remains of rooms and cells, as well as cannons and remnants of walls. Beautiful views of the beaches and the rock.

Where to stay in Fernando de Noronha

The bad news is that, if you're on a budget, your trip to Fernando de Noronha might be starting to look a whole lot more expensive than you'd planned. Accommodations on the remote archipelago are understandably expensive, as all food and supplies have to be specially shipped in. All lodgings are on the largest island, Fernando de Noronha, which is the only one permanently inhabited in the archipelago. The majority of options consist of guesthouses and boutique hotels concentrated in the center of Vila dos Remédios, the island's town. However, look a bit farther outside of town and you can find some excellent eco-resorts and beachside accommodations.
