Locomotiva, Conservatoria

3.4
#4 of 8 in Things to do in Conservatoria
A beloved symbol of Conservatória’s history, you will find Locomotiva at the entrance of the city. Between 1920 and 1935, it pulled the passenger and freight wagons between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, before being replaced by the automobile. Up close, you can admire its mechanisms, which were highly advanced for the times. Among its most famous passengers were Joubert Cortines and José Borges de Freitas, musician brothers who today are considered icons of the city’s musical culture. Saved from the scrapheap, restored and repainted, Locomotiva made its final journey, rolling into Conservatória to great fanfare and a ballad, written and sung by José Borges for the occasion. • Interesting place, however the site maintenance around the locomotive is very bad at night the lights of the surroundings are burned and deserve the best.

  • Visitation Localobrigatório ... a little poorly preserved ... missing more diligence on the part of the Prefecture and sisitantes and kindly locals ... attraction that should be better taken care of ... also deserve a plaque telling the story of the locomotive.

  • That little piece of Rico Registry! I've never seen one so well preserved. A history lesson.
