Religious Site Architectural Building
The historic Santuário do Bom Jesus do Matosinhos is a World Heritage Site, built in the second half of the 18th century. The site, which you can see in the aptly named Praca da Basilica (Square of the Basilica), consists of a church with Rococo interior, an outdoor staircase decorated with statues of the twelve Biblical Prophets, and six chapels with scenes from the Passion of Christ. The sculptures of the Prophets, created by the renowned artist Aleijadinho, are widely considered masterpieces of Baroque art. Make a stop at this national landmark for a lesson in Brazilian art, culture, and history from the early colonial days to the present. The square also offers an unobstructed view of the city and the lush mountains beyond. • If you want to understand the Brazilian Baroque and the story of religiosity in MG, is surely one of the binding sites to visit, beautiful, well maintained despite the weather and vandalism common throughout the Brazil. Easy to get to and with good tourist hotel and hostel options around. A valley in the room of miracles to understand a bit of what I said.
