Catedral de Pedra, Canela

4.7
#1 of 213 in Sightseeing in State of Rio Grande do Sul
Church Tourist Spot
Extremely photogenic Catedral de Pedra is one of Brazil’s finest examples of the English Gothic architectural style. This Cathedral of Stone, as its name literally translates from the Portuguese, features a tower rising 65 m (213 ft) into the air, and includes a carillon of 12 bronze bells imported all the way from Italy. The interior is decorated with painted canvases created by the gaucho artist Marciano Schmitz, who used three panels to depict the sacred "Apparition of Our Lady." Also included are several paintings by Uruguayan artist Pablo Herrera, noted for using wood and clay in his works. Try to time your visit for the evening hours, when the building becomes the centerpiece of a colorful light show. With our international travel planner, Canela attractions like Catedral de Pedra can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • A church very visited, differentiated architecture, it is worth stopping to appreciate. On weekends it gets a little crowded, who can go during the week, always better, in all points of interest.

  • A very beautiful church, all built in stone and super impressive. Your night lighting is beautiful. Easy to get parking spot around, with blue zone. It pays to know.

  • Quite a fast place to see, and it is a landmark at Canela, so hard to miss. I like the architecture of the place. Good photo place.
  • Very pretty on the outside. Ugly and very dull on the inside. Kinda like someone you know... It's barely ok. Not all that you read on their ads. You can drive by it, but I wouldn't waste time going in.
  • The style of the catedral is kinda unique, if you like this sort of architecture I recommend you take a look.
  • Beautiful place with great photo spot!
  • A very beautiful historical church.

Where to stay in Canela

Thanks to its popularity among younger tourists looking for an outdoor adventure, Canela offers a particularly impressive range of budget lodgings. Hostels and simple guesthouses abound, most in buildings that fit with the town's traditional architecture. You won't find any large hotels or expansive resorts in Canela, though higher-end accommodations exist in the form of warm, cosy villas with pleasant gardens. Most places to stay are concentrated around the west of town in or around the neighborhood of Vila Suzana, which lies on the road to nearby Gramado.
