San Matheus Fort, Cabo Frio

4.3
#1 of 7 in Museums in Cabo Frio
Built into a rocky outcropping off the coast, this military installation once used for defense now gives visitors an ideal spot for ocean views. San Matheus Fort defended the settlers near this chunk of coast from threats on the water. Today, it is a landmark that attracts passersby from all over the world. You won't find a museum or guided tour, but the breeze on your face and the sea slamming into the rocks below make this a good location to take in the beauty of the country's coastline. Very nice location, a little difficult to access because of the stones, but good things are just after passing through the portal of entry, you enter the story, worth visiting with the family. Return for sure.

Worth a go... takes a few minutes and the truth is that the view is very beautiful... just steps from the beach.

The Fort São Matheus is a 17TH century building. Thinking of antiquity, is in great condition. Access is a bit tricky, since it is necessary to climb a leaning on rocks on which rests the historic construct. Care must be taken not to fall and hurt. Soon, would indicate the attraction to people with mobility difficulties. The view of the Fort and the surrounding stones is one of the most beautiful of Cabo Frio. It is possible that you lose track of time watching that bluish green sea and listening to the insistent beat of waves on the hillside. Well worth visiting. The negative point of attraction is the lack of tourist management of the site. The city should invest more in guided tours and cultural events at the site.

Where to stay in Cabo Frio

The main bulk of Cabo Frio's accommodations lies between Avenida Teixeira e Souza and Praia do Forte. In this area, choose from pousadas (guesthouses), hostels, and small hotels with rooms at budget to mid-range prices. A few luxury options lie along the sand and the water here, with good views of the surrounding landscape. If you're looking to stay a little out of town, stick to the coastal roads running to the north and south. Along them, you'll find some pretty scenic little pousadas, a few hostels, and some secluded rental apartments and villas.
