Panteao da Patria, Brasilia
(3.5/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
As you approach this National Heritage site, you will be struck by the impressive, dove-shaped building; designed by Brazil’s beloved Oscar Niemeyer, it is a classic example of his distinctive, modernist style. Inside Panteao da Patria, you will find the Steel Book statue, on which are engraved the names of the nation’s heroes, each of them ardent advocates of freedom and democracy. There is also a collection of artwork, including Athos Bulcão’s poignant red mural and João Câmara Filho’s black and white panels. The beautiful stained-glass window by French-Brazilian artist Marianne Peretti, who used purple, red, and white--representing introspection, passion, and peace respectively--to create a symbolic map of Brazil, provides you with a thought-provoking focal point.
