Catedral Metropolitana, Brasilia

4.7
#1 of 1,165 in Historic Sites in Brazil
Religious Site Architectural Building
A concrete hyperboloid architecture constructed from 16 concrete columns, Catedral Metropolitana is a landmark cathedral by Oscar Niemeyer. This contemporary structure is surprising large on the inside considering its small exterior because the cathedral is largely built underground. As you stroll along the entrance pathway, bronze statues of the four apostles greet you.

You'll walk through a dark tunnel under a reflecting pool surrounding the roof to enter the building. This pool helps to cool the building. Walls lined with white marble and three angels suspended from the ceiling create a light, airy feel. Although you'll feel like you're entering a dark, solemn, and small space, intense natural welcomes you through the large roof's 2,000 m2 (22,000 sq ft) of stained glass. • The Cathedral is a must-see stop on the monumental axis. In addition to the unique architecture in your interior has a replica of the Pieta by Michelangelo and three great Angels hanging from the dome. Be sure to visit.

  • One of the most beautiful creations of Niemeyer. I can't decide whether it is more beautiful on the inside, to see the angels descending on a celestial tunnel, or on the outside, framed by the sky. Don't miss the opportunity to speak for your walls acoustically perfect, who propagate whispering over long distances. It is so much fun!

Where to stay in Brasilia

Choosing where to stay during your trip to Brasilia can be somewhat difficult. Due to the city's distinctive layout and lack of a historical "center," accommodations have developed in clusters. By far the best range of options surrounds the distinctive green space of Jardim Burle Marx, in the city's two planned hotel districts. You can also find a good selection of lodgings around Vila Planalto, the city's designated political district, which sits not far from Brasilia's main lake. Wherever you decide to stay, make sure it's within reasonable distance of a metro station or bus stop--you'll want good access to public transport in order to easily navigate the city.
