Catedral Metropolitana, Brasilia

4.7
#1 of 1,159 in Historic Sites in Brazil
A concrete hyperboloid architecture constructed from 16 concrete columns, Catedral Metropolitana is a landmark cathedral by Oscar Niemeyer. This contemporary structure is surprising large on the inside considering its small exterior because the cathedral is largely built underground. As you stroll along the entrance pathway, bronze statues of the four apostles greet you.

You'll walk through a dark tunnel under a reflecting pool surrounding the roof to enter the building. This pool helps to cool the building. Walls lined with white marble and three angels suspended from the ceiling create a light, airy feel. Although you'll feel like you're entering a dark, solemn, and small space, intense natural welcomes you through the large roof's 2,000 m2 (22,000 sq ft) of stained glass. • The Brazil has a large number of Catholic churches in the classic style and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia breaks with that tradition to deliver an innovative building, with the impression of trying to elevate the land up to the divine, through your structure toward the heavens. Inside, see a unique and beautiful stained-glass Windows. It also has a perfect replica of the Pieta, produced by the Italian Museum that holds the original artwork. The angels suspended in the middle of the Cathedral seem to fly lightly over the heads of the visitors. Despite these various elements is a small Cathedral and the visit is fast.

Where to stay in Brasilia

Choosing where to stay during your trip to Brasilia can be somewhat difficult. Due to the city's distinctive layout and lack of a historical "center," accommodations have developed in clusters. By far the best range of options surrounds the distinctive green space of Jardim Burle Marx, in the city's two planned hotel districts. You can also find a good selection of lodgings around Vila Planalto, the city's designated political district, which sits not far from Brasilia's main lake. Wherever you decide to stay, make sure it's within reasonable distance of a metro station or bus stop--you'll want good access to public transport in order to easily navigate the city.
