Government Building Architectural Building
The Palácio da Alvorada is the official residence of the President of Brazil. It is located in the national capital of Brasília, on a peninsula at the margins of Paranoá Lake. The building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and built between 1957 and 1958 in the modernist style. It has been the residence of every Brazilian president since Juscelino Kubitschek. The building is listed as a National Historic Heritage Site.Naming conventionsThe building was initially referred to as the "Presidential Palace". The name "Palácio da Alvorada" ("Palace of Dawn") comes from a quote by Juscelino Kubitschek:HistoryThe Palácio da Alvorada was the first government structure built in the new federal capital. Construction began on April 3, 1957, and was completed on June 30, 1958. Niemeyer's project was based on the principles of simplicity and modernity.2004–2006 restorationIn 2004, the First Lady Marisa Letícia directed the most extensive and historical restoration of the palace in its history. The project took two years to complete at a cost of $18.4 million dollars. Research was conducted to restore the rooms and décor to their original styles. Furniture and decoration objects were also restored. The electric and central air conditioning systems were replaced, and floor and ceiling work was done. Contrary to popular belief, the restoration was not paid by the government, but was part of an ongoing project of restoration of heritage sites under the direction of the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage with funds donated by private corporations (for tax-deduction).

Where to stay in Brasilia

Choosing where to stay during your trip to Brasilia can be somewhat difficult. Due to the city's distinctive layout and lack of a historical "center," accommodations have developed in clusters. By far the best range of options surrounds the distinctive green space of Jardim Burle Marx, in the city's two planned hotel districts. You can also find a good selection of lodgings around Vila Planalto, the city's designated political district, which sits not far from Brasilia's main lake. Wherever you decide to stay, make sure it's within reasonable distance of a metro station or bus stop--you'll want good access to public transport in order to easily navigate the city.

  • This is the official residence of the President of Brazil and was the first building to be completed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1958. Unfortunately, we were unable to enter because but did manage to see it ...  more »
  • Beautiful Niemeyer even from a distance but the Palace is still closed. But if you look for Niemeyer then also look for Bulcao. His Azulejos and murals are extraordinary.  more »
  • Just swung by today in an uber and it is closed due to the current impeachment proceedings. Enjoyed the rest of Brasilia and modern architecture though.  more »

  • Amazing and unique style Palace in the world, designed by the genius Oscar Niemeyer, place where Dilma Rousseff is living at the moment as she is waiting to be judged in the impeachment case, Strong women that I highly admire, the best world cup and Olympics ever was perfectly organised because of her hard work also all major corruption scandals being investigated and riches going to jail during her mandate is thanks to her. things didn't work well for her because of the political moment her mandate have been through...
  • One of the Ghost Palace in Brazil.. Horrible
  • It is one of the most characteristic places of the Brazilian Capital. The maintenance of the gardens and buildings are flawless. I think they catch up the best professionals available in the country to do so :)
