Gruta do Lago Azul, Bonito

Cave Nature / Park
Gruta do Lago Azul enjoys a reputation for its deep blue lake and numerous fossils of large prehistoric mammals, including giant sloths and saber-toothed tigers. Local indigenous people discovered the entrance to the cave in 1924, and were probably the first to set foot inside. The underground lake is over 60 m (200 ft) deep, but the subterranean river that feeds it remains undiscovered to this day. See how the blue water twinkles when touched by the sunlight streaming from a hole in the ceiling. • Postcard of beautiful, you can't lose! A show of exuberance of nature/very attentive and informative guides/organized, you keep your mouth open when you get near the Blue Lake.

  • Great time of contemplation and contact with nature. Ride with a great organization and ease of access, provided that the person is willing to go up and down stairs. The guide was excellent.

  • Another one of those mandatory activities, which adds very little. I can't say I met Beautiful without visiting the Gruta do Lago Azul, but the truth is that the ride is a bummer without size. Down by a cave entrance to the edge of the Lake, take some pictures so bad (because of darkness) and returns.

  • Unique place. Not all guides speak English. Definitely worth a visit.
  • I stayed in the Visitor Center while the tourists I was with went on tour. Small gift shop, big wait. Is not Russia.
  • The Gruta do Lago Azul is about 1 hour drive from Bonito, mostly dirt road (translation: bumpy ride). It is a very beautiful cave with plenty of stalagmites (^) and stalactites (v). From the reception area there is a short hike to the entrance of the cave and then one descends steps that have handrails except in a few spots. At the bottom one can see the lake and its beautiful blue water. Best time to go: from mid-november to mid-february there is a time when the sun hits the late directly. Usually around 8:30-9:00 AM in the morning. These are the most sought after spots for the cave and I believe one needs to setup a visit at these times months ahead. Tip: Apply plenty of insect repellent on exposed skin. Some women obviously knew about this and came with yoga pants and long sleeves which are an excellent way to defeat the mosquitoes
  • Vale a pena

Where to stay in Bonito

The main town in Bonito provides a good range of accommodations to suit diverse tastes and budgets, with everything from luxury resort-style hotels to backpacker-friendly hostels dotting the gridded urban area. Heading east out of the main town, a few remote pousadas (guesthouses) lie along the course of the Rio Formosa. Pre-booking is essential, particularly during peak season (July and December to March), because of the relatively small number of options available for an ever-growing demand.
