Gruta do Lago Azul, Bonito

4.6
Gruta do Lago Azul enjoys a reputation for its deep blue lake and numerous fossils of large prehistoric mammals, including giant sloths and saber-toothed tigers. Local indigenous people discovered the entrance to the cave in 1924, and were probably the first to set foot inside. The underground lake is over 60 m (200 ft) deep, but the subterranean river that feeds it remains undiscovered to this day. See how the blue water twinkles when touched by the sunlight streaming from a hole in the ceiling. • The site is for contemplation, a lot of steps, but it's well worth knowing. Who accompanied the tour guide was Yolanda, a wonderful person, really a differentiator.

  • Do the tour of the cave before making any beautiful ride well probably will find more dull. This cave has differential by your water coloring to get inside her. Enough information given by what causes already has a good idea about the beautiful rock formations. It's a walk of contemplation and unfortunately you can't get in the water of the Grotto. We went to St. Michael's Cave after that and we feel completely dull, if you want to do the two go on to San Miguel, and then on the Blue Lake.

  • Walk more "cheap", and perhaps less sold because "is only for photos". Lie. Or for photos. Because the local beauty can't be captured. It is a contemplative Moment. Natural Beauty. Made a stone stairway to get to the shore of the Blue Lagoon. Our guide was the Rosary. Experienced guide. An excellent ride. I wish I could explore more locations of the grotto, q unfortunately are not open to the public. But it is beautiful.

  • Amazing water falls. Fantastic scenery and the set up is well thought out.
  • Unique place. Not all guides speak English. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Very small cave. No English guide. Didn't like it.
  • The Gruta do Lago Azul is about 1 hour drive from Bonito, mostly dirt road (translation: bumpy ride). It is a very beautiful cave with plenty of stalagmites (^) and stalactites (v). From the reception area there is a short hike to the entrance of the cave and then one descends steps that have handrails except in a few spots. At the bottom one can see the lake and its beautiful blue water. Best time to go: from mid-november to mid-february there is a time when the sun hits the late directly. Usually around 8:30-9:00 AM in the morning. These are the most sought after spots for the cave and I believe one needs to setup a visit at these times months ahead. Tip: Apply plenty of insect repellent on exposed skin. Some women obviously knew about this and came with yoga pants and long sleeves which are an excellent way to defeat the mosquitoes
  • No english speaking Guide and too expensive.
