Located just 11 kilometers (7 mi) outside of the city center, Mirante da Serra do Rio do Rastro provides a view of this entire mountain range and its winding roads. From a height of 1460 meters (5,000 ft), you can see more than 100 kilometers (62 mi) of lush Atlantic forests with a diverse flora and fauna that comes right up to the road. Observe a menagerie of monkeys (howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and marmosets), as well as a number of birds, such as eagles and parrots, native only to this area. Locals advise that driving up or down these scenic but steep roads you must go slowly, and be very careful to avoid trucks and buses coming from the opposite direction.
