Palacio da Liberdade, Belo Horizonte

4.4
#4 of 45 in Museums in Belo Horizonte
Specialty Museum Museum
On weekends and public holidays, Palacio da Liberdade opens its doors to the public with a permanent exhibition entitled "Palace of Liberty - Memories and Stories." Opened in 1897, the palace was for many years the seat of government in Belo Horizonte, and has been the scene of many decisions that have shaped the nation. Equally as fascinating as the building's political history are the eclectic architecture and decor. The exterior of the building combines numerous European styles, of which the neo-classical elements are predominant, whilst the decor ranges from Louis XV, to Moorish, to Art Nouveau. On the tour you pass through 30 sumptuous rooms filled with crystal chandeliers, gilded bronze, parquet floors and rich furniture. The centerpiece of the palace is an iron staircase, cast in Germany, in the Art Nouveau style. Put Palacio da Liberdade and other Belo Horizonte attractions into our Belo Horizonte vacation route planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

Where to stay in Belo Horizonte

Most of the city's accommodations lie within the inner ring road, in close proximity to the best attractions in Belo Horizonte. For convenience, look to stay in the vicinity of Praça Raul Soares, the city's central park and rotary. You can also find a range of high-rise hotels a bit farther south, in the neighborhoods of Boa Viagem and Savassi, close to Praça Diogo de Vasconcelos. About 10 km (6.2 mi) north of the city center, the 1940s neighborhood of Pampulha stands out as one of the most interesting places to visit in Belo Horizonte, and offers a decent selection of lodgings near the airport.

  • Beautiful architectural building. Is part of the history of the State. Check beforehand if is possible an visit inside the palace.
  • The Palace of liberty currently went back to being the seat of the Executive branch of Minas Gerais, although most are in the city Administrative offices. The building is stunning on the outside and inside and has beautiful gardens at the entrance and on the sides with the blue palm trees (Bismarck).
