Praca da Republica, Belem

3.7
#6 of 19 in Sightseeing in Belem
Landmark Tourist Spot
You get a true sense of Belém’s history when you visit Praca da Republica. The beautiful neoclassical Theatro da Paz, epitomizing the golden age of the rubber trade, is considered one of the 14 most beautiful jewels of Brazilian patrimony. The European-inspired architecture of the Theatro Experimental Waldemar Henrique and the Art School of the Federal University of Pará provide you with Amazonian culture both past and present. At the center of Praca da Republica stands a 20 m (66 ft) tall Carrara marble monument commemorating the proclamation of the republic in Brazil. The Sunday morning craft market attracts crowds of locals, but during the week Praca da Republica is less busy. Within its confines, you feel far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city and can laze in the shade of the mango trees. • A busy place, with attractions of all kinds and taste, I went to a wheel, but it's a good place to hang out with the family.

  • Beautiful square, manicured, tree-lined, all in excellent condition. Worth the visit. Quite different from others in the city, inspires tranquility.

  • One of the most beautiful squares of Brazil, with the imposing Teatro da Paz is the friendly Waldemar Henrique Theatre, is the picture of neglect. Dirty, dangerous and completely destroyed areas. An example of the squares of Bethlehem: abandoned beauty! My suggestion: don't go. In fact, our streets are all on the same basis: pass away.

Where to stay in Belem

In Belem, choose from a pleasant array of accommodations depending on your needs. Its central business district, around Avenida Presidente Vargas, offers plenty of large, high-end hotels catering to visiting businesspeople and those looking to enjoy the city in style. Alternatively, you can stay in the historical neighborhood of Campina, where budget lodgings, such as youth hostels and independent guesthouses, make up the majority of options. If you're visiting Belem primarily as a base for onward travel, consider staying near the city's main bus station in São Brás.
