Cidade Velha, Belem

3.5
#22 of 41 in Neighborhoods in Brazil
The oldest district in Belém, Cidade Velha is home to many superb examples of colonial architecture. Amongst the many palaces, churches and colonial mansions, don't miss the dazzling white Church of St. Alexander, now home to the Museum of Sacred Art of Pará, or the literally named Palace of Eleven Windows. The beauty of the architecture is matched by Mangal das Garças ("Mangrove of the Herons"), a 40,00 sq m (430,556 sq ft) nature reserve home to diverse species of birds, both wild and in an aviary, and a butterfly garden with almost 800 insects. Learn about the history of the Brazilian navy at the Museum of Navigation of the Amazon, or climb the park's 47 m (157 ft) observation tower for an unrivalled 360 degree panorama of Belém. A visit to Cidade Velha represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Belem vacation builder to plot your vacation.

Consider Bethlehem a city with strong identity. And to know it is essential to visit the old town. Recommend just beware and do the tours in the morning or after the 3:00 pm (commented to me that after lunch is a bit empty, due to NAP), because it has few people on the street around lunch

Big and loud is the area of the old town. There are good places to meet and to take good pictures ... believe that the whole area should be better preserved, maintained and clean, the Sun and heat abrasante could disrupt a little ... and the torrential rain has to take care of a place to stay.

Sadness! That's what I felt when visiting the old town. It hurts the heart to see very old buildings, with whatever how many decades of existence, deteriorating naked. Houses falling apart, open sewer, dirty streets, urinating on the walls and squares, foul-smelling ubiquitous, chaotic, cluttered and trade that in no way contributes to a historic area. I think (sorry, local citizens) to be absurd that do not require action or cover attitudes of relevant bodies. A shame! Visit, but a summer place to go was to be spectacular, but it's part of Brazil that we make a point to pretend it doesn't exist.

Where to stay in Belem

In Belem, choose from a pleasant array of accommodations depending on your needs. Its central business district, around Avenida Presidente Vargas, offers plenty of large, high-end hotels catering to visiting businesspeople and those looking to enjoy the city in style. Alternatively, you can stay in the historical neighborhood of Campina, where budget lodgings, such as youth hostels and independent guesthouses, make up the majority of options. If you're visiting Belem primarily as a base for onward travel, consider staying near the city's main bus station in São Brás.
