Cidade Velha, Belem

Categories: Neighborhoods, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
3.5/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web
The oldest district in Belém, Cidade Velha is home to many superb examples of colonial architecture. Amongst the many palaces, churches and colonial mansions, don't miss the dazzling white Church of St. Alexander, now home to the Museum of Sacred Art of Pará, or the literally named Palace of Eleven Windows. The beauty of the architecture is matched by Mangal das Garças ("Mangrove of the Herons"), a 40,00 sq m (430,556 sq ft) nature reserve home to diverse species of birds, both wild and in an aviary, and a butterfly garden with almost 800 insects. Learn about the history of the Brazilian navy at the Museum of Navigation of the Amazon, or climb the park's 47 m (157 ft) observation tower for an unrivalled 360 degree panorama of Belém. A visit to Cidade Velha represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Belem vacation builder to plot your vacation.

  • It's nice to do a walk through the old town and knowing the other side of Bethlehem. Has some beautiful churches, but cleaning the city leaves much to be desired.
