Lencois Maranhenses National Park, Barreirinhas

(4.8/5 based on 3,600+ reviews on the web)
On the banks of the Preguiças River, Lencois Maranhenses National Park is quite extensive with 1500 square km (930 sq mi) filled with dunes up to 40 feet tall and freshwater ponds called lagoons--whose waters range from bright green to azure blue. Composed of large, white, sweeping dunes, at first glance Lençóis Maranhenses looks like an archetypal desert. In fact, it outside the Amazon Basin, a region subject to regular rainfall. This causes a peculiar phenomenon: fresh water collects in the valleys between sand dunes, dotting the desert and landscape with blue and green lagoons.

Rare geological phenomenon formed the most famous lagoon called Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon), which is closer and more crowded. Lagoa Bonita (Beauty Lagoon) is further out, less traveled, and famous for its charm and excellent swimming conditions. Since personal vehicles are not permitted into the National Park, you can hire a guide service to take you to the dunes and lagoons with a 4 x 4 Jeep. You can rent a dune buggy, but beware that buggy's are prone to getting stuck in some sands, can run out of fuel, and are not permitted in all places. You can also opt to walk out to the dunes and lagoons, as well as hire a trekking service to escort you across these strange lands. • We, me and wife in March 2017, starting to fill ponds. as the period of rains in regiaão had begun recently, are not all lagoons that are good to visit with that so I go into a pond with water until the chest had to walk a lot in the dunes (actually a nice walk, not recommend this time for all the people, the person must have a minimum of physical activity. Good only for the photos). Best time of the year will be in the months of June to September. When even people with little custom in physical activity and better age can reach in Lakes closest to where the Toyota Truck ("pau de arara" can get. But it is beautiful!! Worth it!! Independent of the pond.

  • I've been a October/2015 and the local access is through a Toyota (adapted with chairs on top), where it comes to a certain location and then the rest of the tour is done on foot. It's a walk a bit pulled, because of the soft sand, but visual compensates for all the fatigue, it is recommended to bring water and a snack, do you have any points of sale of products out there. The basins are magnificent great for bathing, which at the time I went was a little dry, due to lack of rain at the site, but worth it

  • best to visit off saison otherwise it would be way too overcrowed to simple the magic of this place. Furthermore the lagoon might have shrinked already to take a swim.  more »
