Historic cities of Sao Cristovao and Laranjeiras, Aracaju

3.5
#5 of 8 in Historic Sites in Aracaju
Travel back in time to the Historic cities of Sao Cristovao and Laranjeiras where expansive, cobblestone plazas are bordered with simple, orange and yellow-colored buildings. Stroll the streets, past locals traveling by mule and cart, and image yourself a town local heading home after church for a family meal in a rustic kitchen. In Laranjeiras, look for a church with a tower called Morro do Bonfim Hill. Walk toward the church and ask a local about the keys to the tower, they will point you towards a family home near the church's entrance. Knock on the door and politely ask to be let into the church. Once inside, climb the tower steps until you reach a lookout. It provides a wonderful view of the town and surrounding area, the same view that many a priest must have seen, unchanged after almost two centuries. • We were in St. Kitts just. We arrived late in the afternoon, but as the sun sets around 5:00 pm, it was already dark. All the churches and museums close the 4:00 pm, but we were able to enter the Church of San Francisco, which is in the main square, because there would be a novena in the Church, starting the 7:00 pm. On site, there are buildings of the 17th century, including the San Francisco church, monastery, old Santa Casa de Misericórdia, former headquarters of the Sergipe state government, in addition to a cruise where you read the date of 1658. For those who love history is very worthwhile, it's beautiful to see the old buildings still preserved. The site has been down for many years and is currently undergoing restoration (including are redoing the lighting to mimic what was at the time of construction of the works, in the 17th century). I believe that after the completion of the works will be more beautiful still. We went by car, following the waze and been through some deserted highways and with the track pretty bad. In the Church, guided us back by BR101, because we got on the way has had many rounds. It was worth it, it's about a mile to go to St. Kitts to Aracaju by BR101, but highway is well kept and duplicated.

  • A charming neighbor. One of the oldest cities of Brazil urgently needs restoration, but regardless, it's really nice to walk through the Historic Centre and enjoy the churches, museums, Convents, the houses. A pleasant surprise so close to jovial Aracaju. Churches built in the 17th century tell our story. The Plaza de San Francisco has the title of world heritage site. In Saint Kitts was where sister Dulce started your religious path in the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the immaculate conception of the mother of God. Visit St. Christopher's view and feel close to some of the rich history of Brazil. Deserves your visit very much!!!!! Unfortunately I would have gone to Orange, but it has not been possible, staying for a next time.

  • the cities are really charming tell the history of Brazil but lack investment and careful with the museums, the churches. A shame because they are historical buildings of great value. Security is also not the place since in laranjeiras guided me if I wanted to go in the churches of the high call a guard to accompany me
